Hi I am new here and only just beginning the journey of converting to WVO. I am not yet the owner of a delica as I am waiting for finances to be approved at the bank, but I wanted to post to find out some things which may help in my decision about WVO vs biodiesel.
1) Where can I get WVO? From what I can tell there is a company that collects the WVO from local restaurants as part of a problem called green source i believe. I can't figure out what they do with the oil once they get it though. And if they have the monopoly on the oil, are there any restaurants that some of you local folks know about who allow pick up of their oil?
2) how much space do you need for the barrels and filtration set up? I live in a townhouse with no garage. I do have a backyard though. Will it attract bears or other critters storing the oil outside?
Thanks for any help.

I'll try and answer this, though I don't live in Vancouver.
1/Before going WVO try first securing a source; the lower mainland is the one area in BC you'd have to work hard to obtain a reliable source. If you present your self properly to a restaurant and explain what you want to use the oil for; given time you should be able to obtain oil. The idea of a restaurant oil being recycled locally within a community may be attractive to the supplier, maybe offer advertising: eg a window decal - Powered by the Keg.
2/ Consider the footprint of a couple of barrels, with extra room for storing cubes of oil. Critters will try to get into veggie, maybe consider picking up a small shed - beats spilling the stuff near your stuff. Your right about bears and raccoons btw, it's candy to them.

I guess it means getting out and asking.....lol. I just wonder if I will be able to get around the company that is paying restaurants to remove their oil. Smaller restaurants? Is there any kind of restaurant or oil I should avoid?BCDelica wrote:

And thanks for the info about critters. If I have a very tall (like 8ft) fence secured by a locked gate (townhouse patio) and some sort of small storage method/shed do you think that would be enough to keep them out?

Well avoid the restaurants that leave there waste oil exposed to the elements. Even a restaurant that only changes oil once a week is usable; it'll just have more entrenched water and be dirtier. It'll smell more too boot, this weekend our neighbor thank us for not using Chinese restaurant oil and the disgusting smell they found it had. Shouldn't some restaurateurs like to keep there waste oil locally, even if you had to pay a small amount for a good source.
Yes, but whatch out for raccoons!
