Smither's Hottest Delica (Yup D+L, you heard it here first!)

Post by josh »

So here it is, I was going to hold off until it was all done... but things keep taking longer and I have been getting some griping people (Kev thats you) begging for pics.

Anyhow, I love it, haven't named it yet, and have lots to do still. The garage (and Jame's garage) is full of parts for it. So far the only mods have been shackles and wheels. It came with a hitch, and small cute front window curtains. More soon.

Wow, nice van. Are those 31"x9.5's or 31"x10.5's??

They are great lookin. Also the mud terrians are known to be a bit like a hockey puck on snow, ice and in the rain (once down to 1/3 tread remaining) My solution was to have them "siped" made a world of difference during the last of their days. Im guessing that you won't have to worry about that for a long long time though. JMHO.

Hey Josh you skinny ol' bastard you (Brit ridicule - meant in the kindest way  ) Hope all is well?

Glad to see you've got the new ride sorted and mighty fine it looks too. Those 31's look peachy and as for those wheels - mana from the gods my friend....mana from the gods! Just about the sweetest set-up I've seen on an L300 yet.

Also digging the wheelarch (fender?) treatment - chopped nicely for that extra bit of clearance (note to Kev: that's why some trim is missing on both sides...)

As for the Zuk....well what can I say but.....DUUUUUDE! I'm quite a fan of those things (as you will see very shortly) but those wheels/tryes are just the mutts nuts! Looks like it's gonna go tearing some flesh and spitting out the remains with a slightly evil/satisfied grin while blood pours from its fangs! How can a set of wheels/tyres transform a car so much? Nice one.

I like the look of the rear bed with the sides removed...and also the retro-fit head lamps which jsut add to the sinister stance! What plans have you got next?

Keep well young man.

Well I am first hooking up James with his one minitruck, and then the winches go on, and a few other choice things. Its easier to do it up than the delica. And it fits in smaller spots. However this does not mean the Delica is being put on hold!

Thanks for the notes of admiration. I am loving them both.

We spent all day Saturday welding the winch on the front, its not quite done, but I'll put some pics up when shes ready. And thats just the beginning. The roof rack and ladder will be next. It's okay... I don't mind being the 2nd coolest Delica in Smithers... for now. cheers, Leah

D & L,

What type of winch are you installing? I got a Warn Winch 8274 but haven't installed it yet (it's quite large!) so I'd be curious to see how you're mounting yours. Your pictures will be great to view! And don't worry about being your 2nd rank, I'm in Vancouver so out of the Testosterone race... 8-)

Our winch is a Warn Winch too. It's a used one and the model number is rubbed off, but it is good for 8000. It is quite large too, we cut out the middle section of the front bars and welded a plate on to re-inforce it. I will post picks when it is done.

Josh,
Did you take off the moulding completely on the driver side, and just the portion behind the front wheel on the passenger side? that is what is looks like in the photo anyway but just want to be sure? I'm thinking of doing the same thing since I still get the occasional "rub" on the that trim piece. I've got a bit more offset compared to most people running 31" so I've already cut out quite a bit of material. Assuming you took off the trim...did you also do any additional cutting afterwards?

G'morning Josh, didn't mean to dis your ride; it'd look great with all that plastic trim gone. Solid color Delicas do, look at any 90 and earlier ones.

Just sent of pic's this morning; was up a nice spur leading to nice alpine lakes, working through the water bars and avalanches just fine, and came across two side by side's recognizing the passenger in the new Yamaha. Just had to find his email and send him a picture of your truck, cause he'd complained that he can't afford his own . Less money for the Zuki, more then one seasons use, stereo, and most importantly we know his wife, she'll come along if she can be warm and dry.

Was it difficult spec'ing one out from Japan with the diff locks?

Cheers,
Kev

Bruce,

The wheels are ITP SS 108's that I got a good deal on. And they are skinned with Dirt Tamer Quad tires. But I am selling the tires to a friend and getting some mudlites because they are radials and will perform better on the minitruck (the others are not strong enough to last) Here's a pic of the rims.

Yeah, I took off those pieces of molding, I also did some intence trimming. In fact I cut about 2" off. I had to tack weld the edges back together because I had to grind off the whole connecting edge of the body panel. I am in the process of taking the molding and resizing it (cuting it shorter, and syliconing it back together) then remounting it to look nice and clean (attention to detail! I am learning from Bruces meticulous postings). I am not nearly as redneck as I once was!

Kev,

I know you never mean harm, no disrespect taken. I always rack up everything to jealousy! :-D *grin* No serious, you are the last person I would expect anything negative from.

As for sourcing a suzuki with diffs, its sort of a luck thing. There is nothing that I can find on the auction sheets that tells you about them. So its just a pleasant supprise when they show up. The y only exist on the suzuki's and the Daihatsu's. They are very common on the zuk's. I am hoping to find them on my Daihatsu HiJet that is arriving next month (its a four door cab... I am stoked). You'll have to come up here for a fun week of fishing and wheeling. You know you are always invited Kev. In fact that invitation extends to everyone.

Don't get off the 'ole Island much anymore, but a visit to Smithers would be nice, for sure. I flew in there for work in late Sept. about 15 years ago - WOW! Stunning vistas. Beautiful fall colours. A really pleasant little town too. Got housed in a hunting lodge to the north a bit where none of the cats had ears... :? Burrrr. I visited a lot of places throughout BC in my archaeology days, and Smithers was always one of my favourites :-D :M

Morning, nothing negative there buddy; just believe solid color Deli's look better with that whole area of lower body trim off. Forgot to mention Randi said your is 'very nice', high praise indeed as she rarely compliments Delicas' and is known to dis the two tones to the extreme. She says two tone anything is an old person's vehicle. (don't tell James, LOL)>

Pump about heading up!! What about the Crabfest in your guys plans??

Ciao,
Kevin
