BC Provincial Inspection

Post by David »

Hi all this is my first post. I have a 1991 L300 waiting for me at Annacis Island. I bought it through Samurai Garage. My question is what are the necessary modifications. I have been told headlights, taillights, high mounted brake light, and daytime running lights. It is a standard so no nuetral switch, I think. Any information on how to deal with this, especially how to deal with the headlights would be great. This forum is a great idea. I look forward to sharing with you all.

Hi David -- Welcome to the forum!

From my own experience (about 16 months ago importing a 1990 Delica), the inspection facility will require Daytime Runing Lights (you can pay about $100-$150 to have these installed,or pick up a $25 kit from Canadian Tire and install yourself -- took me 1/2 day or so to figure this out).

I personally never had do deal with any lighting issues. I understand however that inspection facilities were sent out a letter in early 2006 directing them to pay more attention to this (see Snowslide's post at viewtopic.php?t=17&highlight=inspection).

My own suggestion would be to deal with the Daytime Runing Light issue only (this almost certainly will be an issue), and proceed with inspection. Hopefully someone else reading this will have imported their Delica in 2006 and have some more up-to-date experience...

hey David- congrats on being a new owner! I'm currently trying to sort out the whole headlight thing as well, and I don't have a whole lot to report just yet. There are some people asking around from a couple of the other Delica forums for me, so hopefully I'll know something soon.

I looked at a 1991 L300 last week that an importer had just brought it. The tail lights were okay, and all the glass looked like it had the proper markings. The importer said that he was going to add some reflectors on the side of the van so that the headlights and brake lights wrap around a little better. He was also going to add a high mounted brake light.

As for the headlights, he showed me the Japanese coding on them and told me that they weren't compliant here. He said that he gets replacement headlights from Taiwan that are made for the European market, and thus have the ECE coding on them which is acceptable here. He also said that some shops still overlook this matter, though.

I've been calling around to several shops that do inspections, and it certainly seems as if the government is squeezing them to pay more attention to all these details. I talked to four or five shops last week, and they all said that I should do my homework on this stuff so that I don't get rejected. All this has me a bit paranoid now :?

That's about all I can say now, though I'm working pretty hard to locate headlamps in case this is a sticking point...

and welcome to the forum!!

I just found out that the headlamps on my Delica have markings E13 and E11 on them, which might be the ECE markings for European compliance... I hope this is the case... back to mining the motor vehicle act...

Thanks fellas
I guess I'll just bring it home for now and deal with the easy stuff, then try my luck, and deal with the result. I also heard from a fellow in Vancouver that said he was looking into the European rating being equivalent to one of our standards. That would make me smile. The sooner we discover the answers the faster this forum will grow with like minded visionaries like ourselves.

Hi David,

I look forward to hearing what you find out. :D

My Van will be doing the slow wait for inspection and VIN, and any thing that helps will be great. For example I noticed two other 91's had a second set of running lights installed and reflectors installed in each corner. The importer in Parksville installs all that too be absolutely certain it passes.

snowslide mentioned an importer who gets european lights from taiwan for the delicas... any more information on this? which importer is sourcing these? and any idea where from in taiwan?

headlights are one of my stumbling blocks in the import process, I really prefer the molded headlights (it may be a 15 year old vehicle, but with the molded headlights it doesn't look like one) but at the same time, if they can't be made to comply, I really don't want to be stuck with a $10,000 lawn orrnament...

End of Story

Post by David »

Bought a pair of headlights from Niko.com via EBay. The headlights arrived two weeks after mailing. Shipped by DHL Germany but arrived by Canada Post. Tried to track it at one point but that proved hopeless. None the less here they are. They fit, they are marked correctly. And I passed Inspection. I had to swap the wiring harness off of the old set. One had square one triangular quick connects. The German lights had an extra wire and bulb for city lights.

168 Euros ($242 CAD)includes shipping
$33 CAD taxes and duty
Total $275 CAD

smile on my face priceless

good luck all

great to hear that you passed inspection David. My 1991 L300 should get on a boat by the end of the month here, so I'll be ordering the headlighs soon myself.

Did you do the daytime running lights conversion yourself? Or have to make any other modifications?

Headlight source confirmation

Post by Seaside »

Hey David,

I think I found the headlights you mentioned on the Niko site but was a little unsure I had the right part number/Delica year sorted out.

Would you mind posting (confirming) the part numbers as specified on your shipment for your 91 Delica and perhaps the direct link then on the Niko site.

I expect to be ordering my 90/91 Delica exceed very shortly but wanted to solidify the headlight issue before I signed on the dotted line.

Also how are the lights working for you. I am assuming you are no longer “high beaming“ the oncoming traffic. Can only get away with that so long.... in a small town anyway.

Hard to say what the corresponding link is exactly because nothing seemed advertised exactly the same in two places (Ebay.de and Niko.com), or make 100% sense to me. Dates were confusing and descriptions incomplete.. And I don't read German. So I would be assuming. Since I bought it from Niko on Ebay, as it was much cheaper than from his web site, I would suggest emailing Niko and asking him for a current link to the same items that he ultimately mailed to me. I just paid the buy-now price on Ebay. I had to use Pay-pal. I didn't want to wait for the auction. Niko should remember me, I asked lots of questions and caused him lots of bother and he was great. Mention David from Canada.

Hi there folks!

Geoff here. I am currently in the market for a Delica. I am super excited by the thought of getting my hands on, and butt into, my own someday soon. I think what's going on here is fantastic and it is exactly what I was looking for. Are there any suggestions, comments, advice for somebody in my position looking to import? I live up near Campbell River, and soon will be moving to the east coast. Hence the need for a van... is there anybody in this area that imports? I have founf a few online, japanoid.com, terra2imports, to name a couple. I hope that all is well and that people are having great fun with their deli's. Oh, and if anybody is selling one on Vancouver Island, I would greatly appreciate any info on that as well.
Thanks for you forum
Geoff
