New Ontario Based PERSPECTIVE Owner!

Post by ntrtaynr »

good Evening all...

I have been lurking on the site for quite some time, but as the VW scandal is finally starting to rectify, I've been looking hard at what I am going replace my volkswagon with, and I think the Delica may well be for me. So, I am essentially feeling out the possibilities. I have driven one. My girl did too, and she really wasn't comfortable with the right hand drive, but I don't think that's a good enough reason yet for me to abandon my dream!! I have a few questions I am hoping folks can shed light on...

I am ontario based, but moving further east to PEI. The all wheel drive diesel models are what I am looking at, for handling in weather, as well as fuel economy. I am having a hard time getting any accurate stats on some things, so direction or comments on the following would be welcomed with gratitude;

Fuel Economy
Do any of you tow, if so what, and have you had any challenges?
Any issue getting parts or service for your whip?

I'm looking forward to making it all happen!!!!

Well they are a lot of fun.
Are you looking for an L400 or a L300?
My assumption to having a Delica that Far East would be parts. Not that you can't get them but that the shipping could be costly going across Canada like that. Might be cheaper to get a parts van at the same time or shortly after.
The further east of Alberta you go the less you see of these vans. I know there was a one for sale in Halifax for a long time (L400).
Vanagon are all over the place and are a little too expensive for my blood, given that they are 10 older.
I'm not sure Delica's have an AWD version. I could be wrong
Only 2wd with the option of doing 4wd high and 4wd low.
AWD suck back the gas all the time.

As far as fuel mileage I don't know the math but my 2.8 gets about 440kms to a 50 litre tank.
It's half of what my F350 does
But it's also half of the cylinders.

Sounds like you're after an L400/Space Gear. The L400 has a centre differential, so you can use 4WD for regular driving (though you'll save fuel using 2WD). The L300/Star Wagon doesn't have a centre diff, so you can only use 4WD off-road where the wheels can slip enough to prevent transmission damage.

Fuel economy is ok for a 20-year old, 2-ton, brick-shaped people mover. The 2.8 diesel L400 does about 10-14l/100km (the 2.5l diesel L300 will do 9-12l/100km)

I tow with my L300, it's fine as long as you don't want to go too fast. The L400's larger engine would definitely help. No issues with towing, the van's mass makes it very stable.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.
