Espar heater

So after owning my 94 L400 lwb (PF8W) I decided it was time for the first major modification. I installed a espar heater

Since we install these at work all the time I was able to get one for a decent price ($700, I know it's still a lot but I live in Manitoba). After lying under my van for a long time I finally settled for a spot. I build a bracket for the heater

Once the bracket was installed I mounted the heater.

For the fuel supply is simply installed a tee into the supply line to the filter, right in front of the fuel tank.

For the fuel pump I drilled a hole into the tank mount ( not the tank[emoji6] .

Next I figured out where to tee into the coolant system. I used this fancy check valve and teed it into the supply to the front heater core

I pinched off the hose so hardly any coolant was lost. Now I had to run the coolant lines.
After that I hooked up all the electrical and mounted the timer

To my surprise it started at first try. It's not cold out yet so I don't know how fast it will heat up. I also want to run the cab fan at the same time. To be able to do that I have to configure the controller with the espar service tool. I try to get a hold of that next week and update this post.

Thanks for this. I'm going to install an Espar in my 95 l300 soon.

Any suggestions on where I should buy one? I called Thermo King Calgary for a quote and after 2 weeks they still haven't gotten back to me.

Hey Andy, thats a great addition to your van. Did u get the controller configured to run the cab fan for heat? We are expecting a polar vortex here in US east coast so I can imagine that ur espar is being put to good use where you are.

It's minus 20 Celsius here right now and after running the heater for an hour it's up at operating temperature. I did not manage to hook up the cab fan yet but I have some ideas . Maybe this weekend I have some time. Last weekend was car stereo installing time. I also changed the axle and transfer case oil to 75w90 synthetic. Because I bought my van on Vancouver Island I had to increase the strength of the engine coolant. It was only good for minus 18. Not strong enough for around here. Now it's pretty much ready for winter.

Check out heatso.com for Espar and Webasto air and coolant heaters. Good prices and a fair number of Sprinter guys have done business with them with great results.

I'm putting the Webasto air heater in the back of my Sprinter for supplemental heat. There is a ton of install and operation notes over at the http://sprinter-source.com forums.
