Stereo Systems

Post by BigBirdy »

We just bought a 1997 Delica Space Gear Super Exceed and was wonderign if there is anything unique about putting in a new sound system? Are all the sizes and voltages the same as for NA vehicles or is there anything we need to know before searching for a new system?

Cheers

Yes, the sizes and voltages are the same as a NA car. I installed a double DIN Kenwood stereo with NAV into my 97 Super Exceed. The size of the space for the stereo is pretty standard.
There is an adapter you can get to plug into the stock wiring harness on the Delica so as to use the existing wiring to attach to your new stereo.
I chose to rewire the system as the stock wiring is not all that beefy.
Speaker sizes were standard. There are lots of posts on here re which speaker sizes are in the Delica. The stock speakers are very cheap. You will notice a huge improvement when you upgrade the speakers.
You need to be careful on your choice of rear speakers as there isn't much room depth-wise. You'll have to choose a more shallow speaker to fit. Again, there are lots of posts re this. Check the specifications for the speakers to ensure they are the right depth.
You are only limited by your imagination and your budget.
Mine has a touch screen which controls all the functions. I am right handed. I didn't even think of this until after I installed the system. I needed to aim the fingers of my left hand at the icons on the touch screen now that I was driving a RHD. I wasn't as ambidextrous as I thought I was....I missed a lot Haha
I'm getting better at it though.
Good luck with your install.

The center console around the stereo can be brittle due to UV exposure. Very common for the plastic screw posts to shatter.

Lots of room for local head units.

The doors can handle 5" speakers behind he factory grills. The dashes have a few different configurations with tweeter positions depending on the model you got.

The rear uses 6x9 and they are slim units....if you want the stealth look there are only a few brands that have slim magnet speakers. If you surface mount these may be in the passenger's hips or get damaged when you fold up the rear seats if they stick out too much.

Best Buy had some nice selections when I did the stereo in my L400. I have 4" (2way)in the dash and 6" mid range in the front doors.
