Rust spots.

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Rust spots.

Post by bassnailer »

I have a couple of small rust spots on the roof. I figured I would wire brush and sand area and repaint. I have never dealt with rust before. Is this the formula for dealing with rust spots? Any advice on what type of paint or product that I should use would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Sad news brother......

If you have an L300 super exceed with a crystal lyte roof, then what's happening is your roof is rusting from the inside out. The reason for this is there's a cavity between the metal roof and the headliner with all the other junk that's up in there. Since the metal is bare and condensation forms from the heat of the sun from the glass, you get rust.

The only way to properly fix this is to remove everything up there and treat it with something that inhibits rust. There are some great posts on here as well as pictures on how to do this, but for me it's wayyyyyy beyond my pay grade!!!! I'd have no problems with the removal, it's the putting back that's got me scared.

What I've done with mine is just put some grease on the rusty spots on the roof. This was recommended by my guy who does my undercoating. It's really budget, but until I can find someone in Ontario who's confident enough to tackle this job properly, I'm just leaving it alone......

Anyway, best of luck with this. Phil

I'm picking up what you're putting down, Phil. I have what you described. I think I'll treat the two small spots for now. Next year I would like to put a new membrane on the roof. I know that someone had posted that repair, with pictures, a few years ago. It looked good at the time. I wonder how it has held up. I should look into that.

Yeah, some people won't buy a van With this option because of this major issue. It's too bad Mitsubishi didn't treat the underside of the roof from the factory. I guess that's why they say hindsight's 20/20.

Still, I love my van and this option. The power shades are still working on mine. A little grease on the roof and you're good to go for a few more miles..... 8-)
