Fuel consumption on an L400 gas version

Hello,

I have had my Delica L400 for a week. It has just under 88 k on it. I have barely done 100 km and I am down half a tank which are 75 litre capacity. Could I have a fuel filter problem or a leak? Would a dirty filter cause such bad fuel use? I can not see any pools of gas under the parked Delica. If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

First place I'd check is your air filter element. Think simplest first before you go tear the intake manifold apart. An old or even a poor quality filter element will go through fuel. The denser the filter element (i.e.; one full of dirt) the less air gets through. You go through fuel, lose power and dump soot out your tail pipe.

Take a look through the Delica FAQ Section, for which you must be logged in to see. remember that most the Delicas in Canada (both L300 & L400) are diesel machines. Also, if you go to the "L400 Dedicated Category Reference Forum" you can find shop manuals.

I'm on my 2nd gas delica, now a 99 V6 Chamonix

Probably the engine runs well, shifts a little slow into 2nd gear, leaks a little oil on the left hand valve cover (6cyl) and has seemingly poor fuel consumption.

That's par for the course on the 4 cyl and V6s. The fuel injection system is not the best and the catalytic converter plugs up easily on our cheap gas especially after 15 yrs in Japan. Also the brakes still tend to drag a bit even though the four wheel discs are such an improvement over the rear drum brakes L300s.
Not to mention the vehicle weight you are hauling around, aggressive tread tires, tire pressure and what's on your roof rack. Then there's your lead foot but we won't discuss that.

You can scan the engine at a Hyundai / Mitsubishi dealership or a good garage for defects but probably nothing will show. That's a good sign...

Winter fuel consumption is worse than summer consumption, don't know why...

The solution: Check the air filter (thx Falco), plugs, timing and brakes. Drill out or change the catalytic converter (easy peasy). If mileage or power improves then you're a genius and the problem is solved.

IMHO the V6's are the best delicas ever built, cheap to maintain, lots of power and almost bullet proof "but" they do have a few minor problems.
