So I removed and blanked my EGR today (Thanks to all the post about them, especially the step by step blanking with attached pics by Mystery Machine and Falco). Excitedly I hopped in to take a test drive after the installation but noticed what I've researched as "chuffing" when I was driving. It just sounds like a stereotypical diesel engine to me but the fact that I didn't hear it before, and am a little neurotic about my Delica especially after I do anything on it, has got me concerned.
The chuffing only occurs when I have my foot on the gas, and only when I'm in drive. It didn't seem to have any performance issues on the drive but I only took it for a spin around the neighborhood (climbing a hill, coming down, and getting it up to a max of 80 or so).
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Did you plug the vacuum hose that went to the EGR?

Yeah plugged it with a screw.
Also, this is more or less the sound it's making in drive

Sounds like your blanking plates are not secure and you have exhaust leakage.

Yup. That was the nail on the head Mr. Flibble, thanks. Somehow the bottom gasket missed the top stud and was dangling out the back. Took it out with minimally toasted fingers, refitted it, and it sounds and feels great now. Hopefully it adds some kms to the tank for my road trip too
