Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Changed tranny fluid. No transmission now. WTF?

Post by BobTheRussian »

Hello Delica world...

So since its the beginning of Winter and the snow is falling here in the Koots, I decided it would be a grand old time to change my transmission fluid.

So with the front wheels on ramps, I drained the (93' auto) tranny fluid pan, then removed the pan, cleaned the filter, put everything back together then put in 2-3 litres of "Quaker State" Dextron 3 through where the dipstick goes in (took ages in the cold).

Then...(is this where I messed up?)

I tried disconnecting both the hoses going in and out the pan, to try find which one would spurt when the vans running and figure which the supply was. Neither one was pumping oil out. Should have been disconnecting hoses at the trans oil cooler I think? Is the trans oil cooler front right (drivers side in front of the wheel) or the front left side cooler looking thing (bigger). I understand one is air con and one is trans oil?

Anyways, I took the van off the ramps and then tried to reverse it. Nothing. Nothing in 4wd, nothing in 2wd. Just nothing. The shifter moves, the reverse sound comes on (thank god!) but nothing happens. The trannys not engaging. The lines I did take off seemed to have tranny oil in them, so I dont think I disconnected any vacuum lines or anything....

:?:

The dipstick for the tranny oil (shorter one next to the engine oil) when I checked it this morning was black all the way down... which was odd as I just put new red oil in it last night. As far as I know though its not leaking. Just not engaging.

Im confused. My van is not running well. Coughing and spluttering, blue, white, black smoke...

any ideas much appreciated...

Thank you from the West Koots!

Check both dipsticks - sounds to me like you put the tranny fluid in the engine? If you did it's best to drain everything and start over. The tranny level can only be checked with the engine running in neutral or park and it's best if it's warm. Good luck!!

OK thanks... I knew it had to be the stupidest thing possible. At least I can entertain you guys.

The taller wider dipstick has to be the tranny oil. So ill drain everything, fill with dextron 2 and then replace the oil with some 5w-40 for the winter missions...

As for flushing the tranny oil... any enlightening information on where the transmission oil cooler is? Front right or left?

Cheers

Air conditioning is on the left I believe.
My manual tranny L300 (sold) has the rad on the left.
Leaving the rad on the right to be the tranny radiator (which mine didn't have)

Flushing apparently isn't recommended on these old transmissions. Butch @ CVI recommends just changing 1 or 2 liters for a few oil changes and you basically end up with all new oil and none of the potential problems of a flush.
