Horn Disassembly

Post by eastywesty »

Hi All,

My horn wore out the other day so I pulled the fuse and am now without tail lights or dash lights. I have searched the forum high and low and the only info I have found on getting at the horn is to remove the screw that would be just over your lap. I did that and nothing moves. I don't really want to break any plastic bits so I figured I'd ask if anyone knows what the next step is for getting it off? Thanks in advance.

You're right, there's a little Phillips screw on the underside of the steering wheel, viewed from your lap position. Once you've undone the screw the horn configuration comes off driver's side first. Here is a link to a thread that has some pictures that might give you an idea: http://www.delica.ca/forum/l300-combina ... 11284.html (Check four pictures down and read what's around it).

Once you get the horn button off (don't forget to unplug the wire), you peel the vinyl covering off to get to the mechanism. What has happened, judging by your description, there is a foam membrane between the to contact plates that you push together when you wish to engage the horn. Basically it's an on/off switch. This foam is very old and starts to disintegrate with age, ergo there's now nothing keeping the plates apart when you're not using the horn. What I did was use two plastic coffee stir sticks to bolster the separation of the plates, I put them across the top and bottom of the plates so the middle of the plate is still able to make contact when I need the horn to sound. Got the idea from Butch at CVI and it's been working well for four or so years.

Falco.

Falco has the fix. My horn was randomly going off in traffic . . . let's just say it led to a couple of awkward situations. I ended up using a couple pieces of scrap veneer strips - same exact idea as the coffee stix. It may seem hokey, but it works.

Yeah I had this much figured out from previous threads I was just unclear on getting the horn off the steering wheel without breaking any little plastic bits. I now know that it is just the one screw and then it pops off bottom first. All fixed and back to normal!!!
