Noise from front end. Wheel Bearing? CV?

Post by Lomoski »

Hi guys,
I have been doing some work on my bus. I have replaced the inner and outer tie rod ends, things are MUCH tighter now going over bumps and handling. But now I notice a noise and a vibration that I am having a hard time placing. It's a constant whum whum whum noise that increases with speed, is dead steady (almost metronome like) and starts right as I pull away from a stop and continues all the way up to top speed increasing with the speed increase. When I turn to the right it is much more noticeable and I feel it more in the steering wheel. To me it sounds like a cv joint. Anyone else have a similar issue? Don't want to start replacing expensive parts without some idea of what it might be. On a stand it doesn't have any "slop" since i've replaced the tie rod ends and when I spin the wheel I can't feel anything noticeable. Thoughts? Thanks guys!

Usually CV joints will make a clicking sounds when they start going bad.

I would think that wheel bearings should be looked into, but with the sealed bearings that CV axles use in the hubs, you sometimes can't tell just be looking or even feeling them by hand.

The way you describe it, I doubt it is something like warped rotors.

Hello!

On the topic of CV shafts, i had my tires off yesterday and noticed that my inside CV shaft dust boot is torn. This will need to be replaced and hopefully no damage
has been done to the CV and it won't need to be replaced...

I've looked thru the part # listing and haven't found any numbers for either the boot or shaft.

I wouldn't know what to tell the guys at Napa if I went in to ask about this. Would parts be the same for a Delica as they would be for a Montero of the same year? They seem to have listings for those things!

Thanks for any input.

Go to "Delica FAQ Section" (in Delica Canada Technical) and enter the first thread (Useful Links for Vehicle Part Identification Purposes.); scroll down to "JDM Online Catalogue and follow the directions. This will give you the OEM number for the part. Once you have this the parts supplier can cross reference it with after market parts.

Also in the Delica FAQ Section are a few parts threads worth looking at.

I've had a wheel bearing go on a different vehicle (or almost go)
It's a grinding strange noise that usually gets worse with turning.
Get it checked out asap.. not something you want to totally fail.

As a side check your tires you could have a broken belt
Measure it twice, cut once. Dam still cut wrong

There are 3 bearings that are suspect here on the offending side.

The inner and outer bearing that the rotor hub assembly sits on. Then there is a needle bearing inside the spindle that supports the outer cv joint. The CV assembly needs to be removed to test the needle bearing which do sometimes dryout or get filled with grit when the bearing seal fails.
And because most Delicas have no manual hubs for the 4x4 the front axles are always turning.

Take a look at the manual segment for the L300. My money is you have a bearing issue...could be lack of grease, bearing or race wear, too much preload which will cause a wheel bearing to overheat and burn out in short order.
