Loss of power after brake failure

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Loss of power after brake failure

Post by MartyIn3D »

Hi,

A brake hose split last night (very messy!) and I've just had it replaced today. Last night after it split I was trying to find a safe place to stop and I noticed that the l300 felt like it had lost power, if I put my foot down it would rev higher as usual, but it just didn't really make any difference to how fast I was going! I assumed this was something to do with the brakes being "stuck on" because of the loss of pressure...

I've had the brake hose replaced today and the brakes feel fine now but this issue where it feels underpowered is still there. It also seems to be running marginally hotter than usual.

Any ideas?

Coincidence? Just a few weeks ago, the exact time that I replaced my air filter my fuel filter plugged. After replacing the filter, when I started her up it ran like crap. Wouldn't go past 50kph, with lots of stalling and bucking. Replace fuel filter and she was fine. Why it plugged at the moment is beyond me, but I was sure I had buggered something. What's the chance that the fuel filter would plug at the exact moment I replace a completely unrelated component?

Yea, you're probably right... The best way to describe it would be that it feels like driving with the handbrake lightly pulled. So maybe that's seized up?

I think seized brake is the least likely source of your trouble but easy check would be to go for a drive and hen feel the drums. If its dragging they will be very hot. I would check out turbo boost, fuel filter, air filter, vacuum hoses, injectors etc. I once had my turbo wastgate linkage fall off and that made a big difference, especially in soot production. Stomp on the throttle and see how big your exhaust cloud is; if its a thin puff of smoke you're okay, but if it obscures pedestrians and trees, something's not right with your turbo.

well... the front 2 calipers are feeling really hot. So I'm thinking somethings not right there. I've got it booked in to the mechanic on Tuesday so I'll update here when I know what it was for sure!

Calipers can freeze for sure and its common enough for them to do so, but generally you can feel/hear seized brakes as it effects steering and suspension. Popped brake line does suggest its time for brake system overhaul.
