Glowplug tip burnt off.....now what

Ok so it seems like every fall the glow plugs need to be replaced in my 94 Paj 4M40, so it has been really tough to start and so pulled the hyundai glow plugs I bought last time and the very tip of one of the the olds one was gone!. I'm just hoping that it didnt cause any damage to the engine......so any reason they are not lasting very long? been through HKT and Now Hyundai glow plugs........Anyone tried Bosch OR NGK plugs yet? and if so did they have the part number?? looked but havent found the number for the 11v ones on here.

I just pulled the Hyundai plugs out as well and went with the NGK CY-55's and the difference is crazy. My old plugs worked well at the beginning but after about 4-5 months I started getting really rough starts. Just switched to the new ones and it is like night and day. I have to admit that I thought by saving a couple bucks and going with the Hyundai's that it would be OK, but for about an extra $30 I got these from Coombs and i am very happy with them. They told me, and now I am a believer, that the only plugs to get are the ceramic tipped plugs. As far as I know (which is not a lot in life ) the other makes and brands do not use that and that is why they are prone to failing early. Go with NGK's- that is my recommendation.

This is exactly what I got, and exactly where I got it from. I know that RockAuto sells them cheaper, but with duty and shipping I think it would be pretty close to the same.

Well, I don't have a lot in the way of long term testing (only in about about a week!) but I did alot of research on the UK and Oz sites and they seem to think quite highly of them. One thing I forgot to mention that may sway the test a little is that I cleaned my bus-bar really good. I used vinegar and salt to soak it for about 1/2 to 1 hour and then used a green scrubbie to lightly agitate it. Rinsed thoroughly and it shined like a pretty penny. So having that cleaned up might help too.

It's that time for me as well, I've been running the OEM Green Top 6.2V plugs, and now that I've fitted a manual bypass I wouldn't mind trying a set of 12V's.

It's also getting tough to start at 0 degrees lol.

I bought a set of Bosch's off of ebay UK. User Diesel_Injection. They were $93 delivered to my door. Working great so far.

Unfortunately it seems like a lot of math was done by the engineers for these vehicles, and the tolerances are quite tight on which glow plugs will work in which engines, from which years. What a lot have found by trial and error is they either end up coming back to genuine Mitsubishi plugs or they change out the glow circuit for something a bit more robust/available.

As the original poster noted though, luckily enough the tip didn't burn/break off and fall into the cylinder and make a real mess.

Ok so I hooked up a light to the glow plug relay so I can see when power is going to the glow plugs, after starting the paj up they stayed on for 3 minutes then went off. I know they are supposed to stay on for a bit after starting, but I also read that they should just click on for a few seconds then of....then on again for a few seconds then off...until the engine warms up......is this right?

Can't speak for certain on your pajero with a 4M40, but in an l400 with the same engine, the glow plug light illuminates for 2-3 seconds, but the glow plugs stay on for 7 seconds, if you haven't started the engine by this point, they shut off. If the engine is started, the glow plugs will remain on for up to 3 minutes, depending on the coolant temperature. For best winter starting results in Manitoba, I wait the 7 seconds (or listen for the relay click like the older l300's had) and then crank. Hope this helps you.

cool thats exactly what my paj is doing so I guess everything is normal yay! Cant wait to get the new glow plugs in!

So installed the glow plugs and it was the coldest morning this fall at -5 and it fired up like it was warm! no smoke at all either! , so keep this in mind even if your glow plug are glowing red with a battery charger test it does not mean they are working as well at they should be....as all mine after i replaced the dead on were glowing red.

The real test will be after a year if they are still working the same! the testing wil continue! lol
