tried on a 31" tire and......

so my buddy has a set of toyo open country ATs on stock toy offset rims, they are 16" rims, and are 31.5" i believe. Well the van has 2" ball joint spacers and re indexed t bars but they dont clear the transmission cooler in front of the wheel well. Which is really too bad because they looked mega sexy. I suppose I will need to downsize to a 30" tire? I dont want to do too much monkeying around with the body but if i need to I will

They were actually hitting the transmission cooler itself or the little flap that protects it? My 31's were miles away from the tranny cooler but hit the flap and bracket behind it so I removed them.

the tire is closer to the back of the wheel well compared to the front.

If the tire is hitting the transmission cooler, then something is way off. A true 33" tire would cause that but it would hit the rear wheel well first.

to fit a 31" tire, you'll need to remove the front mud flaps, steps and possibly trim some of the front plastic moulding.

Is the backspacing on the rims stock? or something different?

Come to think of it, the only reason for it to hit the transmission cooler before anything else is if you are turning the wheel to the left and you have really wide tires, although with this scenario your sliding door wouldn't open. As Jessie stated, quite a bit of the rear needs to be trimmed but not much at the front.

Yeah I didnt get too carried away with trimming the rear because i was curious to see what was going to contact in the front. Personally I am not sure how game I am to be so quick to ditch the front mud flaps because they are keeping all the debris from the wheels from getting in the coolers. There is a big corner in the rear that would need trimming to get it out of the way but other than that the rears look ok. Like i say those are 31.5" so they are on the big end of things. maybe I need to do some tweaking, but I am starting to think a 30 will do well. I would have preferred the 31s but its not looking too good at this point. My main reason for getting more clearance is for bombing around on lakes, its too easy to get high centered on crusty snow as it was sitting on stock height and 235s. On that note, anyone have suggestions on All season rubber that does well in deep snow as well as ice? we have a lot of ice roads up here and word on the street is big blocky lugs BLOW on ice. My 235s are those dinky goodyear nordic winter tires, which do fine on the ice, but I want a bigger tire that clears snow and dirt big time. maybe I want the best of all worlds :(

31x10.5x15 mud and A/T's work well with a 2" lift on an L300.

In regards to the flaps, just unbolt the metal bracket theat holds them in place. Then find a small peice of rubber, poke bolt holes in it and bolt it right where the bracket came out.

Thanks for the tips! I am thinking I may need to crank up my t bars a little more to get more clearance in the front, judging by the position of the rear lower corners anyhow. I will do some tweaking in the next couple of days because i have an appointment to get a wheel alignment done on Friday! finally found a place willing to look at the van! I will keep you all posted about how the whole process is going!
