I just removed my EGR yesterday, and installed a whizzy pyro guage that works great. I just noticed today that when i start the van now there is a puff of black smoke that never was there before during start up. If its not an indication of a malfunction I really don't care. Is this something to look into? also I am running winter diesel in it still so would that have any effect on the smoke? Or did removing the EGR reveal an issue that was hidden before?
Fear not, Sub, the injector pump dumps extra fuel into the chamber at start-up to insure combustion. What you are seeing is soot, or unburned diesel as a result. I believe all diesels do this.

Worth the piece of mind, eh? I noticed when I took the EGR out ~ my mileage improved by 30%, ran cooler and had more power. Watch out for any galvanic reaction if you are using a steel plate on the intake end, best to have an aluminium gasket to help shield the housing. Make sure there are no air leaks in the intake end or the exhaust end. I made up my own gasket for the exhaust out of brass shim, fits really snug.

Interesting. When I replaced the EGR in our van with a blanking plate and pyro probe, it smoked less. It used to puff a bit of black smoke when taking off from a stop but now it doesn't. Seems to run fine (although it ran very good before blanking off). Can't say that I have noticed any significant performance improvement. I must say that I am glad I put the pyro system in. I am sure I was stressing the motor before I could see just how high the exhaust temp could get if you pushed it.
