Better cold weather starting

Just wondering if others have noticed this as well.

I started blending a bit early this year, what with thinking the weather was finally warming. Well, it wasn't, but there I was with 10 litres of WVO in my tank and the overnight temperature dropped down to -3 last night.

Strange thing was, my Pajero started just fine this morning. It sputtered less than it usually does, firing up within two seconds instead of its usual four or five.

Anybody else see this, or am I the only one blending? I'm almost thinking I could be blending all-year-round (only 5 to 10 litres at a time in the "winter time" here in Victoria). Would be nice to save a bit more on fuel costs.

you can blend all year with the 4M40. We do on the Chamonix and that's up in whistler.

I don't blend below zero.

Above +1 to 10ish (winter) I'll blend 50L diesel / 20L wvo with 50ml 2stroke oil.

Above +15 (summer) I'll blend 35L diesel / 35L wvo with 50ml 2stroke oil.

This is with L400. With L300 I blend more diesel.

Well now I'm just confused. I guess it must not go below 0 in Whistler anymore. Should be able to run that blend year round Paul, or maybe not. Depends which one you listen to. I have found that if I don't purge my two tank system long enough, the next cold start can be just as wishy washy as those posts. Sometimes better than straight diesel, sometimes worse. I'm not sure why, seems to have no consistency on my van.

@Jason: could it have to do with the potential water content in the WVO? I know I'm supposed to "cook" the oil to get rid of residual water, but I'll admit I've been relying on the fuel filter in the vehicle to catch it.

20L+ is too much to blend under zero in a sub 70L tank with the 2.8

10L at sea level with -3 is minimal for 10 litres.

I guess if you wanted we can run a test this upcoming winter right down to the degree :roll:

I don't think there is any water, although I haven't checked recently. I'm kinda anal when it comes to clean fuel. My wvo is settled for about three months, and then I run it through a diesel craft type centrifuge 8 or 9 times at 200C. I do this in 50gal. batches that I use in about 3 days. But I am still fairly new at this wvo thing. I currently have about 15000km on the wvo filter in my van, and it is a fairly small one. (standard grease car filter)

I wasn't questioning tank size, or exact temperatures. In one post you say you don't blend below 0, in another you say you blend year round in Whistler. So cold starts with a blend must be harder than normal, or maybe not? I find this confusing for a wvo newbie such as myself. You are supposed to know what you are talking about, but I don't know which one of your contradicting posts I should put faith in.

I don't blend below zero-ish at the 20L mix of WVO.

when it drops below zero blending is minimal to non existent.

If it's -25 there no way I'm blending. If it's -5 sure. 5-10L. You get a feel for your rig and what it likes and does not like for blending. I'm sure you are familiar with yours. Cheers
