L300 tuning?
Are diesel engines similar to gas in that advancing the timing too much will lead to damaging the engine. I had someone tweek my engine and I worried that there is a price for improved power.

I don't have idea about diesel and gas engine are similar. I think gas made with petrol and do not create pollution. Gas would lead more average than diesel.

Re: L300 tuning?
Not a diesel tuner by any means...but gas and diesel are very different..
Advance a gas motor and you change when the spark plug lights the fuel...too much advance and you get ignition before the piston is at the top trying to push the piston the wrong way = detonation very bad on a gas motor...
Diesel no plugs you are advancing when the fuel enters the motor...diesel ignite there fuel by compressing it till it explodes...that rattle sound is detonation in a diesel they can handle it...
Was it just timing or was fuel turned up? or boost turned up...that is the typical way to get power...My assumption is if it is tuned it has more fuel and maybe boost and on a L300 it is most likely making more EGT...that is what you need to know (you can over boost the motor as well)...
more information?? do you have a EGT or a boost gauge, how does it run now?

Re: L300 tuning?
I was a little short on my first post but I wanted some kind of response right away... I should know better I know haha
I think the concern is that if the detonation happens while any valves are partially open then it will eventually lead to burned valves as the exposed edges of the valve heat up much easier if they are not seated. I remember hearing this years ago but I am not sure if it applies to a diesel.
The tuning to my van was quite a while ago, the boost was in the range of 8-12 if I remember and the blow off opens at approx. 15-16. From the EGR my blow off valve had some carbon build up which was causing me to lose a little boost... anyway the mechanic cleared the valve and tuned my engine up cause I was complaining about lower power. My engine ended up having a bit more ummph after that. After a few months I took the van to a more experienced Deli shop to have the timing belt changed. It didn't run quite as strong after that, before I go back to the original mechanic I want to know if there are any dangers I may encounter while I search for that missing power I desire.
cheers
