More power please!

Post by KwiKonit »

New to the Delica scene and need some info on if its worth wringing more power out of the 2.5 or an engine swap. Ive looked through the l300 tech pages but no one has posted factual power gains. I bought a '93 L300 delica, the 90hp isnt goin to cut it while rollin on 31"s and roof gear.
Anyone have specs on bigger turbos, intercoolers and fuel/engine manegment upgrades? or swapping a L400 engine, How about the VW TDI ?

I'm wondering what you mean by "90hp isn't going to cut it with 31's and roof gear". The only engine mods I've done is blanking the egr and putting in a 2-1/4" side exhaust. I'm running 31's and more roof gear than anyone else I've seen! :-D Its no where near fast but with a pyro I've never had any problems.

Search as someone brought this topic up recently.

4M40 won't fit without major bulkhead/welding/reinforcing + subframe engine mount points and extended transmission mount points need to be made. Floor has to be cut up and raised.

4D56T 3rd gen DOHC CRD is your best bet for a drop in HP upgrade.

If you want a lot of HP gain, you've got the wrong vehicle unless you're adept at engine swap/body fabrication.

My L300 has all the performance improvements and is in top mechanical condition (rebuilt cooling system, rebuilt IP, rebuilt turbo, high performance exhaust, EGR defeated). I'm running an automatic transmission and knobby 235/75R15s. I can cruise with nominal temps at 115kph. Hill climbs remain slow. That is the top end of what this van can do.

If you are a speed demon a heavy little diesel truck is not for you.

there is atleast one person out there who has done a larger turbo/more boost from the current. I can't remember the numbers he makes or what hes done but its been alot of work. He has the 4d55T, and is found on one of these websites I believe. mightyd50 or maxd50scene.

If you haven't geussed by now, hes not in a delica, he has a dodge d50 sold in north america in the late 80's.

There is also an L300 dragster with a 300hp V8, and many L300s down under have had engine swaps. But this is a major modification and in this market you would be better off changing vehicles.

This vehicle is designed to operate at speeds below 80kph. It does an excellent job of that.

Simple propane injection, low egt's, more power all for like $650
Measure it twice, cut once. Dam still cut wrong

Gary upped the HP on his 4D46

http://www.delica.ca/forum/some-new-upg ... 47-15.html

He's got a monster lift and has gone through a few trannies.

HP comes at an expense and once you go above that 'safe peak' threshold, the investment balloons considerably.

Cheap HP-
2.5" exhaust
boost/pyro gauges (monitoring)
up the boost/fuel ratio

moderate HP-
all of the above +
propane injection
shift kit for auto transmission (or 5spd)

upper HP-
all of the above +
DOHC head replacement
HP bored pistons
++++ keep building
or higher HP/torque engine swap
