Photo Radar Ticket

Post by CREGAN »

I admired the photograph I received today from f-ing photo radar. For $89 They could have at least gotten a better angle of my beast. I knew it was a bad idea to wash the dirt off my plate that day. Photo radar has to be the lamest cash grab ever invented by a douche-bag. I hope the mayor of Edmonton invests it wisely in some more retarded "modern art" statues:

Photo radar is no cash grab, nor is it unfair. It's simple and easy: Don't speed = no tickets in the mail... Just sayin'.

When they still had photo radar here the corner of my street and the hwy was a favourite place for the cops to setup. As soon as they (Campbell liberals) cancelled the program traffic sped up a good 10k . I'm all for any means to make it safer out there and I would rather have the speeders pay for it than my taxes/insurance premiums.
That said it would be great if they set the laws for zero tolerance and had the speed limits up by the 10k they allow anyways.

Not sure how sending a person a ticket a month after they speed makes the roads safer? Sort of like being made at your dog a week after the crime no connection.

I think we need police handing out tickets and the cost of tickets should be based on your annual income like in Europe since $200.00 is expensive to some and like pocket change to others.

Well..... I had just made a left turn from a standing stop, up an incline, in the same short block on Keith Road as the Photo Radar stake-out. The persons operating the Photo Radar device were not policemen but civilians hired by, I presume, the RC. I was driving an '81 three quarter tonne Chevy van with an old 305 under the doghouse. I'm sorry but an old van like that, or even a new van like that, does not do 0 to 64 KPH in 30-40 feet up an incline, or down one for that matter, in that short a distance.

Radar guns have been known to clock brick walls doing 50 kliks. I would expect at least a COP to be holding the gun so I actually had someone to argue the point with in court, rather than being condemned under ridiculous circumstances before I even walked into the courtroom. In the end it wasn't the logic that prevailed, I was guilty of exceeding the posted speed by 14 kliks, even though it is a physically impossible scenario. I ended up winning the case because of a clause in the Charter (11b) that guarantees my right to be tried in a reasonable time, not two years after the fact. Are there speeders out there? Of course. Should they slow down? Probably, although I would be more concerned with drivers who don't signal or maintain lane discipline. However, if we are going to go down that "slippery slope" ~ then why not fine everyone in Canada $200.00 because they're probably going to get a license and speed. That sounds constitutional, eh?

Falco.

P.S.: We've gone off topic, this should be a new thread.

Agreed. I got the infraction on December 5 and the ticket on January 5. Doesn't mean squat to me. Safety wise, I will explain the situation. I was going roughly 110 on the major highway into Edmonton (8 Lanes at the point of ticket) and I went to merge off this highway onto the exit so I was letting the vehicle do it's thing and decelerate. Apparently they feel I should have been going EXACTLY 90 when I merged onto this highway exit. My ticket was for going 105 in a 90 zone. Bull$hit is what it really is. How is this saving lives? It is just funding more lame statues and stupid city initiatives.

I think that if police pulled you over and gave you a ticket it would be a memorable learning experience. I am all for it. As long as people who can cry and have a sweet pair of boobs get the same tickets too and not a warning. That is what chaps me is when some stupid driver with a nice rack gets off on the same infraction so many other people get tickets for. Consitency is key.

So are you saying that the posted speed changed from the highway to the exit? In which case regarding the "90" sign, was it on a white background or an amber background? The reason I ask is ~ if it is on an amber background then it is an advisory, not an order to be followed. Ergo you were not infringing the law. At least that's how it is in BC and I would think that motor vehicle highway signs would not vary much between provinces. Worth looking into?

Yeah it was white unfortunately. The posted speed around here is usually taken only as an advisory in my opinion though. There has been the odd time when I have been passing someone on the main highway in the "fast lane" and had a rig rocket pickup riding my ass doing at least 140. The new fast lane speed is apparently no longer 120 around here. Oh well, lesson learnt. Now I watch for pickups, vans, and cars on the side of the road and I don't think about helping the people. I just think about slamming on the brakes and readying my middle finger for the Sudoku playing douch-bag running the camera. That should not be the lesson drivers are learning though.

I agree 100% with this statement. But 50Km/h is stupidly low. On our streets that actually have a good pavement and clearly visible markings and signs it is absolutely safe to go 60 km/h. In Kiev (Capital of Ukraine) They have nothing but holes and speed limit is 60km/h and + 20 km/h allowed. So the actual speed is 80 km/h and it is quiet safe. At first it was a shock for me, but after a week of driving there I noticed that due to the lack of road markings all drivers take more caution while driving.

If I have some guy riding my tailgate ~ I pull over and let them pass. It's great to have a volunteer sweeper clearing the way... Grins.

Wow......$600G for a bunch of balls........You guys out west have so much money you don't know what to do with it all. If my city (St. Catharines) had a spare $600,000.00, it would go towards another Beer Store..... :-D

That is just one of the POS art sculptures! We have a giant baseball bat that cost 400G. They wanted to make a statue a couple months ago of homeless people to show we support them......instead of actually building them homes?

Big point of contention between me and my wife on this point.

She's of the "don't speed, don't get a ticket" school.

Personally, it sickens me to see a dozen police manning a speed trap pulling over car after car after car for doing 20 km over the posted limit; so often for 70 in a 50 zone, 15 yards past the transition boundary (i.e. past the point where it goes from 70 to 50). Tax money used to pay the salary of cops to haul in more tax $$$, all under the irreproachable cloak of "public safety".

If it was really about safety, it'd be more about getting people to take personal responsibility to not do really stupid, dangerous stuff.

If I ruled the world, instead of giving tickets for nominal speeding, I'd give out tickets for the really stupid stuff - like 100 in a 50 zone, and make the fines $3000 instead of $100.

They'd give out 1/10th the tickets, free up the court backlog, bring in more money, and it'd be a real deterrent.

And scaling it up based on income? Great stuff...
