Stereo systems

Hello Everyone,

I looked on the forum a bit and seen a few installs but my real question is what kind of sub/amp should I go for? I am just thinking with boxing day around the corner there might be some sweet deals but I have no idea what is worth it. I don't want to blow $200+ on a sub(or 2 that I am also not sure about) and then have it crap out.

To give a little background I listen to all kinds if music from the 60s to now so I guess a versitile system is what I am looking for.

I have a Sony 1400 watt amp with 2 Sony xplod 15" subs. I purchase as many electronics as possible from Sonic Electronix, they have great prices and fast shipping.

My entire set-up cost me $230 whereas the exact same equipment on "sale" at Canadian tire was $800

That site looks pretty sweet and has a large selection. But how did you pick your subs? and amp? and what is all needed to install said items. (the only other install I have ever done was a cd player and 2 door speakers in my old 82 F150.) I really like the 6" rockfords I have, (door speakers) but I have no idea what I am looking for in the sub/amp department.

To be honest I just decided on having the same brand as my stereo and went as large as I could. You need the amp, subs and wiring kit. You also want to decide on how Many channels and the wattage and ohms (I emailed Sonic to find out if what I chose would be a good match). In the end I didn't have time to wait for their reply as there were only 2 of the subs I wanted left for sale but I was happy when they responded and reassured me that I had made a good choice.

That is a very general question that I also asked when looking for my first set of subs. It is a personal taste issue. Are you going for SPL (big boom) or SQ (sound quality), what kind of music do you like, how much room do you have, what size or brand of amp will you use, are you making your own enclosure... the list goes on. Any sub is better than no sub. Start surfing the net, read what is out there, listen to other systems and you'll become educated on the issue and the choice will become clearer.

I hate saying on a forum what I have in my vehicles.
However I will say that the amps fit nicely under the rear seat mounted
on board and secured in. They flip up and down with the seat under the
bars. And no thief is going to cut/rip/pull them out in under 25 minutes.

I am going to put some in the front door at some point since replacing the
ones in the dash aren't really a good location for good sound and size.

Welcome Francesco18! I'm curious why your first posting in this wonderful forum is information that is easily accessible when researching my system. I also haven't mentioned which of Sony's 1400 Watt amps I have nor do I see how this information helps me or others. Is there a point to this? Have I installed my system wrong?

So now I am the proud owner of a L400 I can actually start looking into buying a stereo. What I am wondering though is where other L400 owners are putting subs and amps. I am thinking of putting the amp under the drivers seat and buying shallow mount subs(the kind for trucks) and getting them to squeeze under the seats that flip up.

The main reason I want to get them is for sound quality not so much the big boom of the 19-25 crowd. The hard part though is what do I now do with all my sweet cassettes !!!!!!! Surprisingly enough the stock stereo is pretty good and is pumping out the jams so far.

My amp is under the front passenger seat, and I have a very large sub box with a 12" sub that normally sits in the very back behind the last row of seats. As I have a LWB this fits the large sub box perfectly.

Well I don't really want to use up my trunk space for a sub, so that's why I was thinking of getting the shallow mount subs. Also I would like it to appear that there are no subs by hiding them under the rear seats. Has anyone tried this yet?? I am going to take some measurements this weekend to see if I squeeze some 10"ers under there in a custom box.

That was my plan, I bought (still have) 2 shall mount 10" subs that will fit boxed under rear seats, there is enough room to put the amp between the two.

Was going to run the box right to the rear door and use the exposed portion as storage with a lid. Put a lip around the top, box liner it for storage on top. (sold Delica )

Had some 5/8 maple plywood to build box vice normal MDF, negligible difference in any sound difference, but a box there will be bumped and crushed, and the plywood will wistand better unless you start spending the time to brace up the mdf.

If you were closer, would say PM about the subs and amp I still have, but shipping to Winnipeg would probably suck.

I like my option as it adds versatility...

Sub-box with quick connects, amp is attached to the box bottom.
With the box in the back it works well for the low frequency wave lengths.
The box on its side makes it easy to stack things on top.

drawback is the length of power cables to the box but I have had no issues. Wire routing is same as wires to rear A/C unit then follow inside side panel to right rear compartment opening where I tuck the cables when the unit is out of the van.

I have a deck that can run dvd's, divx and has bluetooth which I often use to listen to internet radio from my iphone. A necesity for any Canuck fan that has to travel to Squamish. I have had sine power converter which was to power a tv/gaming system but I have yet to install it. I think the window may have passed on doing that as kids are not as into gaming as they once were.... which is a good thing!
