Starts. Idles Rough. Stalls. Hard Retsart..
Good day.
I have read threads of similar regard, and search to earths end, but have not seen anything that helps.
(Problem is in regards to the first start of the day.)
My 4M40 starts real easy! I mean real easy.
Problem is, it idles extremely rough (now)---became much worse after I had mechanic replace fuel filter---stalling within a minute if I leave it alone. Basically, it sputters pupupupup and quits
However, after started if I run and start pumping the fuel filter primer like mad I can nurse it to a good idle. Next, I can not drive it immediately as it merely stalls within a kilometer or two (within a few minutes). After which it requires a lot of cranking/turning over, but It'll run kinda fine.
If nursed to good idle (10 minutes) it'll runs fine all day. Many starts and stops. Often cooled back to 'C'.
- Depressing the throttle to the floorboard as many requested (0ther threads) makes it far far worse. Blows black and dies.
- glow-plugs (NGK) are new. [edit1] this includes power to the plugs and a replaced strap.[/edit]
- new fuel filter
I seen so many suggestions (air in fuel system, shrinking gasket allowing oil to seep in and mix with fuel..) but never a closed thread due to the problem being solved.
Anybody with my problem? More so, anybody been able to rid their deli of such a gremlin?
Thanks in advance for any/all replies.

EDIT: After the injector seals were replaced the above problem was cured! TY, Steven for the suggestion.
I am looking forward to Sask.Crossing. Give 'er a good ole Italian on the way to Louise.
^^

Welcome to forum.
Check this out as I think most likely you may need to replace IP main seal and associated 2 O-rings.
Or need complete IP rebuilt in low possibility and tune up as well.

Thank you, Steven, for both the welcome and the suggestion.
Setting aside whatever that little issues is between you two (in links provided) ^^ I added this to my list of things to talk to my mechanic about since it sounds like others have had positive results. Although I am sure my mech. won't scoff @ the opportunity for additional diagnostics.

Re: Starts. Idles Rough. Stalls. Hard Retsart..
I have a similar problem with my two 96 diesel Delica L400s but it is always worse when it is cold or rainy. On a nice summer day they start easily with no issues.
On a cold rainy day (now) I have difficulty starting and then it will stall. Really hard to start after that.
My friend's diesel Bongo dump truck has just started doing the same, but re-starting is only worse. When it finally does start it will suddenly stop while driving.
It's driving both of us crazy.
Any ideas?

Re: Starts. Idles Rough. Stalls. Hard Retsart..
if you click on active topics or even the links posted above, you'll see that everyone who asks, ends having the same problem and solution.
this is a common issue as it gets brought up to the top with new posts at least a few times every 2-3 weeks come october into the winter because it is more prominent in the fall/winter due to the humidity/moisture level in the air that seeps into the dried up seal
I have updated the topic on what to look for/replace on L400's that includes this issue here :
http://www.delica.ca/forum/new-to-l400- ... -8009.html
you can see the old seal in my picture. It is rock hard, whereas the new seal (installed) is nice and soft as it should be.

Re: Starts. Idles Rough. Stalls. Hard Retsart..
fuel filter tight? an air leak could cause it to run rough....
do the L400 have the prime pumps on the top? If so after sitting for a few hours you should not be able to pump it...
I would start here since the problem got worse after the mechanic replaced the filter..
welcome to the club. also, mini meet at ikea on the 18th in the lower mainland not sure which street corner you live at??

If your Delica's start on warm sunny days...it does not sound like a IP issue...It sounds like glow plug issue and you should not need to Barge them over to the mainland to fixdoodah wrote:thanks for the info... it definitely sounds like an ip issue.... now I just need to barge our vehicles over to the mainland and get them fixed!

Re: Starts. Idles Rough. Stalls. Hard Retsart..
It would be great if you could post up the suspected solution. If it is something simple then everyone with the issue can try it and report if success or failure. If it is something complex then at least they can start saving in the piggy bank.MardyDelica wrote:delica tale,

Re: Starts. Idles Rough. Stalls. Hard Retsart..
Yes please share!!!!! One thing that is exercising me is that my problem is merely a hard start. It NEVER stalls once it running and once warm will start easily. Others who have had the seal problem say that it starts then stalls again a minute or two later. Mine does not do this, just blows huge quantities of smoke and wont start like it has no glow. So that leads me to suspect it might not be the seals, but I can't figure what else it could be.psilosin wrote:It would be great if you could post up the suspected solution. Maybe you can converse with him regarding the part. I will ask him to try and contact you again. He's a good guy and has been more than patient with me and my van.MardyDelica wrote:hi, i see ok
