Moving from BC to ONT

Post by hotplate »

Hey there guys. Come the end of the summer I will be moving out to Ontario in my Delica. What is the process for getting it insured out there? I read allstate is a good insurance company to go with. What is the inspection process? Has anyone had any trouble doing the same thing as me? Thanks

Hey nigematige,

I just went trought the process in February. Getting insurance here in Ottawa for my Deli was somewhat a nightmare.

All those insurance company were a no go:

Cooperator
Allstate
Belair
StateFarm
La turquoise

BUT, Desjardins was quite willing to insure me, and cheaper than BC bumper to bumper.

Anyway, when you get approval for your insurance, here what I've done in order:

1. Approval for insurance
2. Appraisal of your car (for insurance) (let me know if your coming to Ottawa)
3. Get history of driving (for insurance)
4. Ontario Drivers License
* In order to get insurance, you need Ontario driver licence
5. Have insurance company approve rate.
6. Inspection of vehicule and Aircare (they won't accept BC ones)
7. Call Insurance company to have insurance policy started on date you'll have your vehicule plated.
* If you have a valid Insurance policy, Drivers license, Aircare and inspection, you won't get any problem after that.
8. Service Ontario desk.
- They'll have your vehicule registered in the Ontario DMV
- Plates
- They'll have a hard time getting it registered because the VIN is to short, They'll call at head office. Head office will ask the lady are you really sure about that VIN, the lady will ask you, and you'll say yes because that how it was registered in BC and bla bla bla.
- They'll need: Aircare, Inspection, Ownership, Drivers license (Ontario)
9. Post office to ship your plates back to BC. In that envelop you'll need:
- New Address
- New Phone
- Plates (unless it's olympics one)
- Ownership of BC
- Letter asking for cancelation of insurance policy with BC
Ship to:
ICBC Cancelations
151 West Esplanade - Room 205
North Vancouver
BC, V7M 3H9
- Take a tracking record because if the mail loose your plates, you won't be responsible of loosing the plates and being in big trouble with ICBC. Basically, until you have the plates, you pay your policy.

If your process is meticulous than you should get any problem. As you understood, in Ontario, it's not a one stop shop like BC.

1. Insurance
2. Drivers license (not at a service Ontario desk) You need to go to Ontario Driver License location
http://www.drivetest.ca/en/loc/Dec.aspx
3. Safety for vehicule (flat rate in every garage so don't be scared of being ripped off, it's the same price everywhere)
4. Plates, at any Service Ontario desk!

Hope this help
Cheers Mate

Just a couple of things to be wary of:

I don't think Safety Checks are a flat rate. E-tests (ontario for Air Care) are, but safeties depend on shop rates. Also, some you may want to try and find a mechanic who has seen a JDM once or twice before. My experience is that about 50% of the time, a mechanic will fail you on a safety for something not safety related, especially if the car is "weird".

Also, licensing centers are privately owned, and not all of them are good. If an office gives you a stupid answer (like "I'm sorry, you'll have to convert that to LHD before we can register it"), go find another office.

Where are you landing in Ontario?
