Dawson City gets a Delica

Post by SadaBena »

Greetings all!

My wife Sadie and I are now proud owners of a beauty '91 L300 Super Exceed that we purchased up from Isaac B. in Richmond. Last year around this time, we were debating between a '97 Tacoma and a Delica, but lack of time/knowledge led us to buy the truck. But now with a baby on the way and the need for car-seat compatibility, we had the perfect excuse to get back into the market and pick up a Deli.

We both live and work in Dawson City but usually make a couple trips to Whitehorse every summer and now that we're living in Quesnel for school, the Alaska highway and Hwy. 97 are also parts of our well trodden path. We LOVE our van! My wife has fond memories of family trips from Vancouver to Kelowna in a '78 VW, and we now have our own van to make memories in.

We have however had some minor problems getting a couple of parts for it to pass the safety check. A leaking rear axle seal has halted the process, not for the seals themselves, but for a bearing retainer. It's taken two weeks, lots of searching by my mechanic and many phone calls to various JDM-types, but finally we now have the retainer en route from Ontario. Hopefully its going to be smooth sailing from here on out, but I'll be sure to tap into the knowledge base that is this forum if we run into any future problems.

Anywhoo, we'll be in touch with some photos perhaps and future stories when they come. :-D

Where are you parked in Dawson? I'm working in town but my l400 is back home in Vancouver.

Well that is very interesting, there seems to be quite a few past owners of VW vans on this forum! I wonder why? I know I always wanted a Synchro Crew cab.

Here are some pics of my past VWs A 67/1776/dual Dells 3" narrowed/front discs and a 72 Type 2/8 passenger with a 79 hydraulic valve engine...

Ahhh the memories 8-)

Hey Don,

Our van hasn't made its way to Dawson just yet, it'll be down here in Quesnel with my wife until she drives it up in the beginning of June. If you're around at that time I'll send you a message and let you know where it's at for you to take a look.

@Aciled
- Those are some very sweet looking VW's! Hopefully there will be a time when I can expand my fleet to have one or two more rides. I had a '90 Jetta 2-door as a teenager (supposedly somewhat rare), and if I had the time/money I would love to find one of those and make it my cruiser.

Welcome to Canada's True North!

Last count there are 7 delicas in Yukon. My wife and I own a White L300 Exceed, there is an all grey one (a woman on my wifes hockey team owns that one), the editor of North of Ordinary owns one...Yeah there are a few of them around and I suspect more will come.

I live just off the AK hwy drop me a line when you are passing through....
