Need some theories- Van engine will not turn off

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

Need some theories- Van engine will not turn off

Post by steepcreeker »

Asking for some theories for where to start looking.

Currently van engine will not turn off unless I block air intake.

History:
1) Van is L400, converted to WVO.
2) recently (Less than a week) van was not accelerating at start from a stop. Engine idling and starting without any issue, but when I step on the peddle, acceleration would be delayed and occur after 2-5 sec delay. Worsening over the week. The worst occured yesterday, when on a steep incline, van would not accelerate at all. Had to back up, put in Low and then get up accceleration above 2000 RPM, then normal operation.
3) Left van with girlfriend (not the problem!) and when i got back to her, van was running, but no key in ignition. Tried normal stuff to turn it off. No luck. No issues with engine temp, very smooth running. Took of battery Negative, which did nothing.
4) Engine ran best it has in a while during 200 km trip home, with no lag in acceleration. Tried turning it off a couple of times, but no sucess.
4)Got home, blocked off air intake and soffocated engine to stop it. Started up engine and it started normally and ran smoothly. Acceleration was normal. Engine did not shut off. Drove it around a bit and..
5) Instantly, had full guage shut down. No gearing (L,2,D,N,R,P), RPM, speed, fuel, temp, Tac, Info pod, instant door locks. Other elctronics normal, Signals, Headlights, clock, stereo, interior lights. Driving normally.
6) got the van back home, turned fully off (including engine). Turned it back on and everything was back to normal.

So, I do not believe in the paranormal, it's not a ghost in engine(girlfriend's idea)...But I am asking for any help in diagnosing problem.

May need schematic for fuel pump and wiring. Does anyone have that?

Thanks a ton for any suggestions,

You have a ghost!

There is a solenoid on the fuel pump that pinches off the fuel supply with electricity (for sure on the 300 pump and I suspect the 400 pump is the same (other option is mechanic valve or vacuum which is older technology and I cannot see them returning to it)).

I would start my testing there.

I know this sounds loopy... but I had a really effed up dream two nights ago about my 2.8L not turning off because I FUBARed the alternator washing my engine. My step dad and I were troubleshooting and figured it must be the voltage regulator on the alternator from getting it wet. Maybe check that first? LOL Wouldn't be the first time a vivid out of the blue nightmare came true, but that ones for around the fire..

Also check out the UK pajero and delica forums, and I believe I read somewhere that this has been less common but consistent problem with the 2.8, and probably why I had the nightmare to begin with.

Good luck!

Do you know if there is a turbo timer installed, or had been installed?

Hey,
Might want to check your oil breather, goes from
the valve cover back to the intake pre-turbo,
you might be self cycling engine oil, possibly
tainted with some WVO.
An oil catch can help to keep that from happening.
I can't remember if you posted installing one or not.

Also check your intake at the turbo to see
if its getting gunked from bypass. Some restriction
would explain the hesitation.

Do you have the EGR banked?
(I have couple of kits kicking around if you need one)

Check your oil and I would change it,just to be safe.
Just want to make sure you are not getting any WVO/SVO
into your engine oil and polymerizing.
Every 3000km seem to be the interval for super-anal
veggers,synthetic oil too.

I appreciate you not being to proud to post
,hopefully it is something nice and
simple like thedjjack and Pajerry postulated.

Hopefully this post is clear enough,
I am typing one-handed with a teething,drooling
screaming baby on my knee,he only likes the van
pics not text posts :-D

Good Luck
let us know
Right on! 8-)
