An Auditory Challenge - Can you identify this sound?

So I have been having some interesting challenges with the van lately. One of which is figuring out why my glowplugs are burning out prematurely, still working on this issue.

A friend suggested using the following product to help with the winter starting.

So i did. The next day the van did not sound smooth any more. Now it was a loud ticka ticka ticka sort of rattely high note above the "normal" sound of the engine.
At idle (800rpm) to 2100 rpm it makes this ticking noise above 2100 rpm it disappears and sounds normal.

Why did I add that stuff? Nuts!

I would love to hear what the community thinks of this noise in the file I have attached.
It was recorded with the van in Neutral and I slowly brought the rpm up to 2500 and back down to idle.
Listen for the change at about the 10 and 20 second mark.

Ive used that "Stuff" and had no issues. Sorry cant help with the mystery sound.

I'm not a diesel mechanic but have had a few. My hunch is with the additive you loosened up some dirt of some sort and your injector is not spraying a nice as it use to. I'm guessing a run on the highway will take care of it. I have also used that product but have not had any issues with it.

sounds like your valves ticking

possible that stuff loosened deposits on the valves and now you have the loud tick.

put a liter of vegetable oil in your tank and run it through. good lubricating properties.

Incidentally, Running Howes is much cheaper than I originally posted. It comes in bigger bottles and you use much less.

What did you find wrong with it? It made a huge difference when I was trying to start in the cold, more so than petrolabs or another brand I've been using. Has it been damaging certain components?

Pretty much what I said in the link, also I lost power, like on hills &c.. I have tried Petrolabs and noticed not a lot. Howes is good and that is what I currently use. I am sure the holy grail of diesel is out there somewhere ~ I just haven't found it yet.

Weird, when using that 'stuff' I did notice that starting in the cold was a lot easier and my fuel economy hasn't really changed no matter what I use. Petrolabs hasn't made too much of a difference but everyone seems to swear by it so I've bought some. I'll look into Howes when I need some more. Turns out that one of the scrap Delica's in poco had a lot of oil, windsheild washer fluid and petrolabs in it and when I bought the steering wheel adaptor I was given this and a lot of bungee cords for $5. Not too bad of a deal in my opinion.

I thought of that too. However I am not sure adding the veg oil right now living in Calgary would be a good idea.

Do you think that the diesel additive could affect the seals on the Injection Pump or else where?

one liter of veg per 60L of diesel is insignificant regardless of outside temps.

If you don't feel comfortable using that oil, you can buy from a large variety of diesel lubricants at Canadian Tire/Lordco, etc...

Everytime you fill up, you should be adding sometime of lube/additive to the diesel.

OP - was your vehicle cold or warmed up when you made that recording?

My L400 is partcularly noisy when cold. Just started it today after letting it sit outside in the cold for a week in Bellingham (did the Disney thing with the clan ) and Holy Mechanical Mayhem, Batman - it sounded like a bag of hammers for the first few miles. Especially on partial throttle above idle, like when slowing down towards a red light or similar.

When warmed up, sound diminishes greatly. Plenty of get up and go and little to no smoke or oil consumption, so I'm assuming that the noise is a foible of life with a diesel...

I've read several forum threads describing how the greater intensity of ignition shock-fronts inside a diesel (vs gas) cylinder create the "normal" diesel clatter, and when engines are cold and internal tolerances are greater, this clatter is louder and diminishes as things heat up and tolerances drop (when engine and pistons are made of different materials).
