My L300 died

Post by Vanbot »

Hi all,

I seriously overheated my van on the weekend driving up to the Duffey. There was a giant crack in the top hose from the radiator to the engine and replacing it did not make it go. It's in Pemberton right now and the mechanic thinks the head is cracked, blown or warped and he doesn't want to work on it.

I was going to be selling it so I'm not going to put more money into it than what it's worth.

Advice? Buyers? Parts?

Thanks!

Might help to know if it is a just a cracked head or if the block is toast also........ changes the repair cost significantly.

Sorry to hear about the situation

Yes, unfortunately, I'm not the person to figure that out. Does anybody know of a mechanic in Pemberton who works on these?

When I turn the key, it doesn't start, and the exhaust comes out of the radiator.

Unfortunately, I don't live in Pemberton, I'm in Vancouver so I have no way of finding anything out without asking a mechanic to do it.

Well thats a real shame to have an over heated engine.
:-(
What's the current asking price and mileage?
Your asking price will have bearing on the repair investment if someone chooses to save this unit.
Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

Before it blew, I was going to list it for $6500.

160,000 km, regularly maintained and fixed on an ongoing basis.
The interior is in great shape. I just had a full detail with shampoo.
The body is in great shape too.

it's a real shame.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that.

I almost had the same issue this week-end. The previous owner had installed a block heater very close to the manifold/muffler area, with plastic pipe fittings. One of these plastic elbow broke off while driving. Yesterday, i spent the day changing plastic fittings with brass fittings.

Another option is to swap it to a gas motor....Motor will be cheaper. Swap is pretty straight forward.

Unfortunately non-running L300 are not worth much....

You could also try superexceeded as he is removing his motor for a bigger one. Money for his old motor may encourage him to get moving on it :-D.

Sorry for your loss good luck with what ever you decide (I have a engine hoist if you decided to do it yourself free to borrow for Delica owners). Motor swaps are not that hard.

Thank you everyone for your advice and condolences!

I found a buyer for it that was happy to help with all the arrangements. Perhaps it will get reincarnated or a piece of it will find it's way into one of your rigs.

Cheers,
Agata
