Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Rear Fan Issues

Post by shealy »

Hey guys, recently my rear fan has stopped working. In the past I could just kind of smack the unit underneath the van and it would kick in. Now, my smacks are doing nothing. I thought maybe the unit is full of dust and other crap from over the years, so I went to pull out the unit from below today to clean it. I seem to remember someone mentioning to block the flow in some tubes or they would spill out coolant (or some fluid). I put a photo below of what I think may be these tubes. If someone could confirm that these need to be pinched off before detaching, or if I have nothing to worry about? (I don't want to end up with a face-full of coolant fluid....).

Also, anyone have an idea what may be wrong here based on my description earlier as to how the unit was acting up? Or, is there an easier way to access the unit from above behind the controls or something? I've seen some posts about heating issues here, but haven't seen much in the way of fans not working at all. Thanks!

Sorry for the poor picture quality, but here's the tubes in question.

if you have to kick or smack something to make it work (other than your kids), its usually a lose electrical connection, broken solder or damaged wire. not sure where the wiring is for that thing but look to see if any of the exposed wiring bundles look broken down.
i just fixed my 4wd lights and fuel guage just by replacing a small clump of wires that were totally corroded under the vehicle by my transfercase/fueltank.

Have a look in and around there.
Mine quit working and it was a loose wire.
There is a ground wire in that vicinity as well that came off.

Yeah the wires that I can see look okay. That's why I was wondering if it's a better idea to try and access the unit from above, inside the van. It just looks like it should be easier from below to get at it:.. I'll have to give it another go in the next few days.

What's the best way to deal with those hoses? They appear to be coolant lines and if I end up needing to pull the unit out, it looks like I'll have to disconnect them.

Picked up the Iltis about 3 years ago from a guy who bought it at an auction but never put it on the road. its been my daily driver since, last winter i swapped in a 1.9turbo diesel into it and am running it on 50% WVO since mid september. single tank no mods except injection line heated wire for cold startups. cold, loud, slow and lots of fun.
i can start a new thread if you want more info on it.
sorry for the thread hijack.

They are coolant lines, clamp them ~ unless you are desiring a glycol shower. You won't get into that unit from above, there's a floor in the way. The unit comes off, there's a little squirrel fan in the front of the unit, if memory serves me well.

Ya, I'm the one that started the hijack, I should be the apologizer... so get started on that new thread! I always thought an Iltis would make a good little project, I've been a passenger in one plenty of times (back when my clothing matched the original paint scheme...)
