High idling...
Hello everyone!
I am bringing up a topic that I have seen by searching about it, but found nothing in terms of what really might be the problem. Most topics where from 2009, so I suspect that you guys know by now what might cause this.
My L300 is idling a little too fast at 1100rpm on N or P. No, the air conditioning is not turned on. So far I looked at the vacuum hoses (or I think they are) and their all connected. I lubricated the fuel cable and reduced the idle with the adjustment screw, but it stays very close to 1000rpm.
I also been having some issues at start up. It takes many more cranks then usual with massive cloud of black smoke. Tomorrow I will look at the power that comes in to the glow plug (which were changed last winter with the ECU). So I don't know if this has to do anything with the fact that it has been idling faster lately.
Tell me what you think or point me to the right thread.
Cheers!
Fred

Re: High idling...
Would check glow plugs for the smoky starts.
As for high idling make sure that the cable that attaches where the screw adjustment is hasn't gotten snagged on something. This has happened to mine twice. Apparently some librication will help.

Re: High idling...
Yeah, the glow plugs will be checked tomorrow.
About the cable, it is actually a 1\8 of an inch loose... so no way it is the cable. As I said, I have adjusted it with the screw to the very lowest and it is still idling fast... and cable is loose.
Thanks for responding man!

Re: High idling...
I'm experiencing the same problem. When the engine is warmed up but for whatever reason it idles fine cold. Why there would be a difference I don't know. Hopefully somebody can shed some light on this.

Re: High idling...
Is this when the engine is cold? The engine always revs lower until it warms up.

Re: High idling...
Ok, first video do not make any sense to me... because when I hit the A\C it does goes up. But your 2nd video is exactly the same situation. Since I adjusted the cable it is a bit lower but not much.
So anyone out there that has an idea... otherwise I guess I will have to call Coombs on Tuesday morning.

Re: High idling...
I think Konadog has a point. In an earlier post you mentioned that your throttle cable is loose? Could the hand throttle be locked open?

Re: High idling...
I played with the throttled knob and down by the pedal and there was a little play, so no...
It did started a few days ago. At one point it came up to 1100rpm, came back to 750-800rpm and now it is steady to 1000rpm (after playing with the adjustment screw)...

Re: High idling...
I was having a problem like this as well with the strange idling (other than the 2 times when the cable was snagged), went in to have my water pump, belts, thermostat, etc replaced and now it's fine. I'm not sure what Butch at CVI did to make it work properly again though.

Re: High idling...
All of this has been replaced when we bought it a little over a year and a half ago. Maybe it just needs a tuning...
Anyway, thanks for your help!

Re: High idling...
any chance the turbo is sucking oil from the PVC and sending it to the intake. or a leaky turbo? are you using up more oil?
other possible causes: leaky injector or valve seal?
this is based on the same issue i had with my VW diesel.

Re: High idling...
@Fred you mentioned an adjustment screw. This has been mentioned many times on the forum but no pictures. If it wouldn't be too much trouble could you take a picture and circle it? I would like to try adjusting mine as well. Let me know what you find out, i think our idle problems are quite similar.
@rezdiver I have heard of PVC valve blockage creating a ruff idle. My PCV vavle connects to a oil catch can, would a full catch can create a higher idle?

Re: High idling...
if your catchcan is vented to the intake a full catch can may allow oil into the intake through the suction of the turbo, this would cause idle issues as now there is an unaccounted for source of fuel entering the cylinders from the intake side in addition to the diesel from the injectors. this gives you a higher ratio of fuel to be burned and the Injection pump has no control over it.
Cheers,
Reza

Re: High idling...
Good to know! I will try emptying it this weekend and see if that helps.
Should there be suction on the hose connecting to the PVC valve? Is that something I should be testing when I hook it back up?
I'll let you know if that it helps.
