L300 - Dual Bypass Oil Filter Install

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

L300 - Dual Bypass Oil Filter Install

Post by nxski »

I have just recently acquired a dual bypass oil filter system (thanks again Profister). The question now is where to install it!? Before anyone suggests removing the stock air filter I should make it known that I have a K&N filter which I would rather not scrap and also due to the nature of having 2 filters instead of 1 it will not fit anyways. If anyone has seen Felix's install and knows where it's located, I've eyeballed that option as well and it will not fit there either (I think his is a single bypass!?). I'm thinking of mounting it under the floor of the van just behind the front wheels in the middle of the van but slightly closer to the driver side if that makes any sense...

Here are some pictures to try to help with my explanation...

Any thoughts or advice? Is this a reasonable spot to install it?

Thanks

Is that the Amsoil BMK-23? I just finished reading the "Bypass Oil Filters" thread, but it didn't look like anyone had done this mod to an L300 at that point. There was talk about doing it, but no conclusions/pictures. There were some nice pictures of a Frantz install though.

Is the L300 oil filter an M26x1.5 thread (like the L400)? Did you/are you going to drill and tap the adapter or get one made? (Or is Amsoil selling one that fits now?)

I'm looking forward to hearing more and seeing pictures!

Thanks!

Not too much, I have another 500km until my scheduled change and I might drive the van 3 times before the meet if I'm lucky. :-D

Right now I'm just tossing ideas around. I saw someone post about installing the system in front of the rad but that it was tricky to access...trickier still for me with the skid plate on.

It looks like there's enough room under the vehicle. It looks high enough to avoid having debris thrown up at it or get bumped by something. :?

I'm actually not entirely sure about the system and filters, I can check when I get home. It was previously installed on an L400, I don't know how interchangeable that is but I will tap if need be.

It is the BMK-23 system. There are no modifications necessary to make it fit (I'm not sure if it was drilled and tapped already or if the adaptor came the way it is). Hopefully the area I've scoped out will provide enough room for the install. I also purchased an oil catch can today so will try to install that as well (I'm thinking about putting that one where Felix mounted his single bypass).
I'll bring the items to the next meet at any rate so, can anyone see any problems with this set-up? I'm assuming I'll have to add a bit of extra oil due to the additional tubing etc. I'll bring the bits and pieces to the next meet for some further advice at any rate.

It will be getting extra heat off the exhaust in that location. (Not sure if that really matters though).

Typically they are installed in the engine bay so I can't imagine that being a problem. :?

If you're worried about being too close to the exhaust (I wouldn't be), just put a tin shield in between. Easy fix.
