94 Mitsubishi Pajero SWB Build Thread

Post by pajerochris »

"As-is" Pictures of my new vehicle. Props to William for importing it for me, I am very pleased with the purchase. It received 4B ratings from auction, and shows it. Both exterior and interior are in excellent shape for its 93000km mileage. 3.5L V6 with ~220-230HP (I think), power windows, central locking, electronic ride height control, electronic suspension, automatic climate control, rear heating, etc.

Stock headlights, they actually do a pretty good job:

Soon after getting the vehicle, it was time for maintenance. Engine oil and filter were done the first day, and LSD oil, ATF, and hypoid gear oil (for the transfer case) were purchased later. After replacing rear diff oil, I found that the transfer, transmission, and front diff all had new, full oil in them already :D a very good sign.

Nice shorty.

Is there a reason you opted for the 3.5 instead of the 2.8 4M40?

Really, the only reason was power. I wanted this to be very capable on highway driving, especially compared to the 94 YJ sitting in the yard.

I like it. The adjustable ride height is one of the coolest things I've seen. The engine bay on this rig is pretty mint-just a little dusty. Maybe that's why you went for a gasser - not as messy as our oil-burners.

If i were to import another pajero, I would probably go with gas aswell.

Probably much easier to get quality engine related parts, and it has quite a bit of top end power. You can bag on them and not have to worry about heads cracking, leaking valve covers, EGT's, fuel additives, winter glowplug woes etc.

On the trail I really really like the diesel as I don't have to bag on it to get good power. Lower the transfer case gears and you're set! But on dirt/gravel/fsr/street a SWB gasser would be much more fun to drive.

I mean, they didn't win the dakar 9 times with the diesel powerplant, thats forsure..

Good points Pajerry. It is kind of strange driving NA after my TT GTO, but it is a simpler engine bay, albeit less modable for performance. The diesels would be more economical on fuel, and would sound meaner. Plus, they would have worthy low-end torque. It all depends on preferences

Get rid of those stock speakers ASAP! You can fit 6x9's in the rear and the fronts are 4" IIRC.

I have a wrap around bullbar with the yellow fogs and green nav lights if you're into it. Laser cut MITSUBISHI in the front.

6x9's, really? That's awesome! Do you have to take the panels off, or do the grills come off? They didn't seem to pry very easily last time I checked :P

About the bull-bar, can you send me a pic? I'll PM you my email address. I may very well be interested.

Sure I'll see if I can get some pictures tomorrow.

You have to remove the trim around the doors with some wide flat pry tools, screwdrivers will damage it. Once the trim is off you can pry the body panel open enough to get a shorty screwdriver in there to replace the speakers. The stock speakers are six inches, so you just remove the metal mounting adapter and bob's your uncle.

In hindsight I should have put some acoustical insulation for better sound. The body panels resonate quite a bit with the better speakers so it would eliminate some of the woofyness. I had some spray foam insulation but was in a hurry to hit the road so it will have to wait until the panels are off again.

You'll also notice that the grill slots for the speaker are much smaller than a 6x9 so it would be a good idea to trim out a hole and put an aftermarket grill to protect them. Another thing that I should have done with more time but may get a chance to do later.

Hmm interesting.. I will definitely consider some Type R's in there. The rear speakers have reasonable bass right now, and I have my front crossover set high so my JL's don't have to carry much load. Have you rigged up a sub in your SWB yet? I am thinking about getting one, but I'm not sure what size I want. Don't want anything too bulky, a 10" would be fine. Want to find a good place for the amp as well.
