battery and water in fuel lights

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

battery and water in fuel lights

Post by after oil »

battery light and water in fuel light are on. they get brighter when i've got more lights on (like high beams or driving lights, or veg system glow plug heater)
im getting over 12 volts at the battery, and no problems starting. i drained the filter just to be sure it aint water.
any ideas what might be the problem?
thanks!

Alternator.

Or wiring.

Or connections.

Those lights come on together when the system is not registering a "charging voltage" of 13.4-14.3 vdc (depending on the vehicle). The more things you turn on, the bigger the draw on the battery alone (i.e. your failing alternator can't keep up), and the brighter the warning lights get.

failing alternator, eh? and this is confirmable by a reading of less than 13.4V at the battery? the issues with my new ride have been stacking up... ugh
the parts van i bought has sure been handy!

You have to read the voltage when the engine is running and as you turn on more things.

check the connector at the alternator to see if it's loose. Alternators are naughty in the L300's. They sit too low and suck up a lot of road/offroad debris causing the brushes to clog up and fries the voltage reg and diodes.

Have someone check the voltage without the engine on, with the engine at idle and with the engine at 2,000rpm. You should see three rising voltage readings.
