Looking to buy / import.

Hello all!
I have been pretty excited about Delica's for about 6 months now and have been reading the form from the shadows since about then. I am looking to purchase in the spring, April/May. I am expecting to pack quite a few miles on it when I do get one, I drive a lot for work and adventure, and most of my questions are about durability.

I realize these Q's are a bit subjective

I am curious about when the engine is likely to kick the bucket 300k, 500k, 800k? I ask because I haven't seen any for sale >200k
along these lines how does the 4x4 drive train hold out, I saw one thread about someone soon needing there 2nd or 3rd tranny in 15years but no mention of mileage. Similar feed back along these lines would be great. I do understand they are great i am hoping to quantify greatness.

General info about the effects of a modest lift (2-3")on drive train wear is also welcome

I have not been able to find a good review of a delica online something similar to the lemonaid guides, no offense but I think most of the form is a bit biased

My current thoughts for purchase is an L300, Diesel, high roof, manual, with a bit of post purchase internal refit for some camping / etc.

I would say look at the Montaro for a lemonaid idea of service the running gear, brakes etc is all the same...

L300 has the older 4D56T motor good motor but requires new timing belt and the coolant system kept in top notch service...and diesel need oil changes or bypass systems regularly....I expect to get 400,000km+ from my motor (it is just rolling over 200,000 now)...(I have a 1989 L300 5speed low roof (now raised fibreglass roof with slide out rear bed full camper).

The 5 speed is a little rare it is an OK transmission little bit light duty for a diesel and needs to be treated nicely....(I have a 5 speed). Rebuilds for the 5 speed are a little challenging..

Nothing wrong with the automatic at all and rebuilds should not be needed if treated well and any problems properly diagnosed. Most auto shops just want to rebuild these days and not service. But it is a really good transmission..

L400 more conventional design....better engine more power, safer in a accident, little more electronic...


Personally I would by a low price Delica already here and do the work to bring it up over importing one you cannot see...that way you can fix it right and you can see what you have. Go to a shop like CVI to have it looked over especially for rust (Crystal light roof seem to rust out and also rust on where the suspension attaches (more L400)).

Delica about the same as any other Japanese 4X4. Any 4x4 will be harder on parts. 2-3 inch lift not an issue (maybe harder on rear u-joints from really short rear drive shaft and steeper angle). There are for sure some lemons Delicas out there, but most give good reliable service).
