Post by raffix »

hello all!

My name is Raphael, and I currently don't own a delica myself, but my father does. and its a l400 royal :D

and I'm looking for a RHD, and I've always love the Land Cruisers.
What are the pros and cons of each car?

I just want to know are there any forums that dedicate to diesel LC or safari.

thanks everyone!

I recall when looking, before buying my L300 Delica, the Land Cruiser has bad engine issues with 2 models, and only 1 model of engine and transmission was considered reliable ... I dont recall the model numbers affected but beware. The Patrol rides beautifully over the gravel roads (thanx david), just wish the hood did not obstruct ones view of the road (oops, that pothole feels bigger than it looked before the hood obscured our view and now we drove into it). c.

Landcruisers have world proven reliability and are very popular. Use Australia and Africa as a proving ground...When those guys go on an expedition where they are 1000s of km from help...they are typically in a landcruiser of one kind or another.

The only Lancruisers to avoid are the LJ7x and KZJ7x Prado series as there are some issues with the engines (2LTE and 1KZTE) (* bad reputation is way overblown based on my experience using them since 2004 with zero issues but you will simply get tired of people who have heard from a friend that a friend told them so they are telling you how bad your engine is...).

The rest of the 70 series landcruisers are very rugged and spartan...and very expensive. BJ7* series are getting cheaper as they are getting older and have been imported into canada for ~5years. The PZ7* and HZ7* series are $$$ and typically non-turbo so slow as but reliable as a rock.

The 80 series is the most popular as it has all the creature comforts and has a great powerful engine but it needs its big end bearings replaced from time to time as preventative maintanance...no big deal unless you don't do it. There are some auto transmission upgrades recommended for heavy duty use....use that would utterly destroy a Delica to put it in perspective. Huge aftermarket support for expedition gear.

iH8Mud.com is a great site for more Cruiser info than you can shake a stick at.

comparable vehicles :

Nissan Patrol GQ = Toyota Landcruiser 70/80 series
Nissan Patrol GU = Toyota Landcruiser 80 series

They are similar and different. The 70 series can be had in the troop carrier (longest wheelbase/cargo). The Patrol axles are larger/durable than the LC axles. Both auto transmissions in the Patrol/80 series can do with aux cooler and upgrades.
TD42 (patrol) and the 1HZ (LC) engines are both considered to be 1,000,000 mile+ engines as they are built to last forever.

They are built very strong and there are not belts. All gear driven.

You need to drive them to see what suits you. There are many models to choose from on both sides depending on where you live/import from.

This question : Patrol vs Cruiser has been hashed over and over and over and over again over the past 3 decades and you can find endless pro's and con's and all forms of opinions all over the internet.

The two toughest trucks will always have fierce opinion/competition from their owners.

Thanks for all the info guys, I really appreciated it :D

I know about ih8mud.com and have read some of the stuff over there.
I'm looking for a 80 series LC.

@psilosin

when you say big end bearings are they expensive to replaced if they actually break down? also about the transmission upgrade, it just transmission cooler and the such, am i correct?

@jfarsang

GU is what you have now right? did your come with the front and rear lockers?
about the 1HZ engine, is it better than the 1HD-T, better might not be the best word to use, but is it as durable as 1HZ?

I typed in Safari vs Land Cruiser and saw a lot of matches but it shows a lot of the newer models of the same trucks.

sorry for so many questions.

I've owned BJ60's, HJ60's, HJ61's, and HDJ80's. Everyone of them have been excellent. The 60's (non-turbo) are very underpowered but the turbo versions have good power. You can't fault the HDJ80. The only weak links that I am aware of are the BEB's and the "Cold Start" in the injection pump. A rebuilt pump costs $$$$$. Replacing the BEB's is an inexpensive fix as long as they are caught in time. I've recently sold my Cruiser and bought a Pajero. Seemed like a good idea as I love the wife's Delica. The Pajero is a little more civilized than a Cruiser, and the build quality is very good. Very quiet on the highway too. Lots of parts are interchangeable with the Montero which makes them more attractive in Canada.

I have a both Pajero and a Patrol. The Nissan is the Paj big brother in every aspect but the Paj is very capable, just more civilized... In the Patrol I know I'm driving a truck if you know what I mean.
(short man syndrome talking...)

Never owned a LC, just heard they cost a lot more to maintain but I don't think you can go wrong either way, they are all great trucks.

I have a GQ.

I won't be buying a GU in the near future as they are too big. Just like the HDJ81 80 series, the Patrol GU is a large rounded/modern SUV.

The GQ is a large SUV as well but doesn't feel as 'bulky' which is important when driving offroad and for people who are intimidated by the large SUV's.

The GU is heavier than the GQ as well because of the bulbous body.

I Have a question for those that have both driven a Patrol/gran safari and a Pajero with the 4M40 is there a big difference in power?? I find my Pajero Is pretty good off the line but lags at higher speeds/up hills. From my understanding that what you get with high torque and lower HP....

Joe

p.s. I just got my :M decal and it looks pretty good :-D and I think it makes it run better and added 20hp!...... lol

All depends which Patrol you've got. My Pajero is the newer 2.8 AT and my Patrol is a MT N/A.

Way more torque on my Patrol and way better in 4 low but until I install my turbo (it's here...) my Pajero is way quicker and faster. Patrol as is does fine on the flat, still better than my old 300 (I can now cruise at 120 if I want to - but still don't) but with inclines without the turbo I'm back to the end of the slow line.

Once it gets turbo'ed than it's a totally different beast and even my peppy Paj won't be able to keep up... From '93 the Patrol A/T LWB came with a turbo as an option and the SWB as well (and in the M/T too). It's just the LWB M/T that never made it with a turbo. And in any case, aftermarket turbo will outperform the stock turbo...

Enough said, go get one. Either Paj or 'Troll will keep you happy!
