L400 maximum passenger & cargo weight

Hello Deli-ites,

Anyone know the maximum passenger and cargo weight for a '95 L400 space gear? Have about 1000lbs of concrete to haul away. How many trips will it safely take me?

1000lbs should be fine, I've taken 8 people who all weigh over 150lbs each in my L300 along with camping gear up to Whistler and back. Aside from the wheel almost falling of everything was fine (someone tried to steal it while I was up there, nothing to do with the weight)

Your L400 should be able to take a bit more I would think

Depending on configuration the Curb weight of a l400 is around 1,700 – 2,200 kg, the Gross Vehicle Weight is around 2500 kg.

You probably save. I would also adjust the tire pressure and if the trip is longer probably double check it on a scale.

According to the english translation of the owners manual I received from a friend in the UK, the swb l400 is rated to carry 750kg plus 2 or 3 passengers, and the lwb is rated to carry 1000kg plus 2 or 3 passengers. You should be able to do it in one trip no problem. I have had my lwb loaded with 65 bags of wood pellets. that's 2600lbs. It was bottomed out, but made the 25mile trip home down rough country roads no problem.

Are you sure this is not 1000lbs? Otherwise I guess there got something lost in translation as a (safe) payload of around 1200kg for this kind of vehicle is pretty unrealistic, considering that some heavy-duty equipment like Landrover Defender or Nissan Patrol don't come close to this payload.

I thought it might be a misprint when I first got the manual, but after some discussion with some members on one of the UK forums, I was assured it was correct. One member had posted pics of various l400's with the cargo rating sticker on the rear door. These numbers did not seem out of line after I had seen an l300 with a cargo rating sticker on it for 850kg here in Canada. When you consider a mini truck has a rating for 350kg, I would expect the l400 to be able to carry more than a mini truck. The owners manual in the download section looks to be a pretty good attempt at someone making a manual, however the one I have is from http://www.jpnz.co.nz (and while it is possible there are errors or mis-translations) this is a company that specializes in manual translation and reproduction. My manual is 280 pages and provides very good detailed information on most all the functions and features available in these vans. One part I found humorous, is where the manual cautions leaving cigarette lighters, soda cans, and beer cans in the vehicle in direct sunlight, as they may explode. I wonder if the original actually said beer cans, or was this adapted for the market the vans were being exported to. But back to the weight question, I think what is called vehicle weight (gross), in the service manual, is different than what we refer to as the GVW here in North America. Otherwise, you are overloaded if you put seven or eight adults in your van. Also, the same engine tranny and diff are used in lots of canter 1.5 ton trucks, and the engine and tranny are the same in the 2 ton canters.

Then I'd be inclined to go with the Mitsubishi Shop Manual over the Owner's Manual, which I believe is a compilation and not necessarily a Mitsubishi Document.

Another point we need to look at is the Shop Manual is saying that the vehicles in question has either a 4D56; 4G64/4G63 engine in them... So perhaps the owner's manual is the one to look at.

Really, when it comes down to it we are dealing with fifteen to twenty year old vehicles that have limited information on them, but isn't this part of the reason we are having this discussion? Kind of like playing Dungeons & Dragons, you know... we are in a dark passageway when we come across a chamber with 39 doors. Three of the doors have the truths we are looking for. The other 36 hold special surprises behind them...

8 passengers @ 150lbs = 1200lbs + safety net of let say 300lbs!

1500lbs seems like a good call to me and appropriate (WITH CAREFULL DRIVING) for the L400.

Falco had a good point of saying that we have 15 yo vehicles and unless you have new spring and shockers, maybe you should be nice to your van :)

I'm saying that because I've crossed Canada with my L400 LWB and all my room in my van and it was sitting about 3'' lower in the back. I estimate at about 700lbs. Braking was still quite efficient and gas consumption was slightly over 0.75-1L /100km
