First issue with the delica.

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

First issue with the delica.

Post by Chino »

So I had my first issue with the delica when I headed out to work today. Did my normal startup procedure of letting it idle for a few minutes to warm up (1-2 mins) then headed off down the street. On my first corner I had to yield turning left, and as I did that (i pretty much came to a stop) the engine stalled. Luckily I rolled into and out of the intersection with some momentum and started it up again no problem. I figured the engine was still not warm and let it idle another minute and then went to work with no issues. After work, I started it up again and let it warm up as it was sitting for 8 hours. Sure enough I go to reverse and then drive forward to the gate of the compound and it stalls again in drive. This time it took about 3 tries to get it to start, gave it some gas and was on my way. As I got home and was parking it nearly stalled again in drive. RPM's start to dive down, but not all the time? It doesnt seem to mind reverse, and the rpm's in park are 750. Can't wrap my head around this one. Any ideas anyone?

it is a 94 L300, EGR was blocked a month ago as well as the oil changed with filter. Haven't really messed around with it since the EGR, and it was running perfect until today. I did put a Delica/Mitsu sticker on it yesterday though ;)

Help would be appreciated.

3 months ago. Ya I was just looking at everything, and now it won't run longer than a minute without stalling. Air in the fuel lines?

I would recheck the filter gasket, bleed screw, and water drain, if all is good, check the rest of your fuel lines and clamps. Could be your injector pump seal leaking.

sounds like air leak or obstruction to me. 99 out of 100 diesel problems are just that. but theres 99 to 100 different ways it can happen :o

You're either getting no fuel or no air or neither.

Fuel filter check / prime and start.
If you have the tools, crack the injectors and see if there's diesel spitting out while turning over

Ok so I prime the fuel filter and it runs for a minute then dies. So that's telling me its getting air right? Its just the fuel not running to it? I take it when I prime the fuel filter I am supposed to get fuel squirting out the bottom of the filter? Because it is doing that.

It's my first diesel, so I have really no clue.

Air filter is underneath the drivers seat right? I'll check that. What else can I do? I wont start over unless I prime it now.

Thanks guys!

There's your problem. Diesel is not supposed to come out from the filter unit unless you have the bleed screw out or the filter itself is not tight / doesn't have a good seal on the filter housing or the bottom of the filter drain plug/sensor is not tight/o-ring is old.

Does a new fuel filter fix the problem? or do I need a new o ring for the filter to attach too?

How does that affect the delivery of fuel to the engine? Just curious.

On the bottom of the filter is a small drain (for periodically draining water). It is either not closed tight enough, or has a poor o-ring on it. If fuel can leak out when pressurized, air will be sucked in when the vehicle is trying to run.

Wow that was an easy fix. I literally slipped under the delica, tightened the fuel filter wing nut deal a full turn, primed it then started it up with no issues. Took it for a ride for a good 15 mins to make sure, apparently that wing nut being loose does actually ^&%$#@ shit up. I feel like an idiot now.

But anyways, thanks to everyone for the help troubleshooting the problem. If I ever stall again that will be the first thing I check.

Cheers.
