I have come.

Post by Bourrask »

Yoooooooo ! :o

Long story short, I'm a musician living in Québec province who's been drooling over Delica Exceed pictures for 3 weeks. I'm currently driving a mere manual Toyota Tercel '99 (approaching 200000kms), and I've been wanting a real musician car with plenty of place for the road, that can also hitch our 600lbs 4'x6' trailer. I saw all those GMC, Ford and Chevrolet panel fuel-behemoths and I couldn't care less. Even the diesel ones are 8 cylinders... And I don't want a V6 gas van either. I also like better how the tires are positioned on the Delica Exceed. Not all the weight is on the back tires. The normal Delica and the Pajero have all the weight from the back seats/trunk/trailer on the back tires. At least the Exceed has some weight of the back seats between both tire sets. That might look stupid, but when the drummer and bass player are near 600lbs together, it's important !

Some guy in QC sells Mercedes-Benz MB100Ds. It was when I first found out about imported vehicules. However, he rips-off people big time by selling cars 10 000$ more than they should be, saying that it's made by Mercedes so it's expensive, so I lost interest. Then I found a used Toyota Hi-Ace, which led me in my researches to the Mitsubishi Delica Exceed, and it literally melt my face. I mean, look at this.

I sadly learned about the RHD ban in QC. However, since vehicules registered before the first ban in 2009 can still be on the road, I -think- if a dealer has a car already registered in QC it could get transferred. So I'm trying to find just that...

Meanwhile, how can I -see- the difference between the l300 and l400 you guys keep talking about ? For instance, is this a l400 ?

Also, I saw some dealers write in some Delica and Pajero ads "all weather version" or "winter ready with 2 batteries". Does that mean normal diesel versions won't start here in winter ? Winters in Québec can be rather humid... but my Tercel has NEVER thought twice when I turned the key, even in biting humid -30C degrees. I love diesel because of the fuel economy. My parents with their 4 cylinders 5 speed MB100 camper do about 800kms.

Anyway, I'm rambling.
Thanks and above all take care !!!

Welcome to Delica Canada, Bourrask.

The picture that you posted, asking if it was an L400 is in fact an L300. The L300 has the classic hard lines. The L400 is pretty much a different vehicle and kind of looks like a supe'd up Ford Windstar:

Actually, the last one is an L400, sorry, couldn't resist.

Ooooooooooooooooooooh OKAY !!! I was aware of that model, and kept wondering why some of them were also called "Exceed".

Ok, so the one I really want is an L300 then. I enjoy more the "truck" feel of it... The L400 is, a bit like you said, closer to a jacked up "van". Looking at it I feel as if people seating behind + lugage + trailer will be weighing a bit too much on the back tires. Have you encountered that problem with the L400 ?

I read on this forum that the L400 was better on the highway though... It's what I'll do mostly, so it's a shame since I really think the L300 would suit my "carrying needs" better.

Thanks

I have ridden in an L400, very comfortable on the highway and I could see it as a highway cruiser. Having said that, I like the feel of my L300. She cruises nicely, although a bit slower on the steep hills ~ but for me it's not about the destination, I don't mind the odd slow hill. You pretty much need to drive the L300 like a tractor/trailer, especially if you are towing a fairly heavy trailer. I went to Kamloops via the Duffy Lake Road towing 250Kg of paper, my IP is set lean at the moment so the engine is not running at it's optimum, still ~ fifty kliks in second gear and I was over the top before too long and caught up with my schedule a little way down the road. If you need to get to places faster then perhaps the L400 could be better suited to your needs. They also come in LWB formats, too.

In stock format, the L400 will handle more weight at the back (coil spring / 5-link suspension) compared to the L300 (leafpack / 4-link suspension).

The L300 has more room compared to the short wheelbase L400.

The L400 long wheel base has more room then the L300.

If I was carrying two people equal to 600 lbs and band gear, I would get the L400 long wheel base. Adding on 1,000+ lbs to an L300, you can start to feel it up hills and on the highway.

The L300 has a much better turning radius (good in parking/tight spots) better visibility, better seating position (but not as comfortable) and more of a truck-like feel when compared to the L400.

They are very different from each other. I would advise you to look at all three models (L300, L400 SWB, L400 LWB).

Bienvenue a delica.ca. Encore un autre francophone!

Considering you are looking to haul two king sized band mates, gear, and a trailer, I would suggest you look at the 2800cc models - Pajero or Delica L400.

Falco, the Windstar pic is epic.

Hee haw ! Thanks !

Hmmmm... I didn't know about different L400 wheel bases. And it's good to know about the suspension. I don't really mind slowing down in hills, to me it's a normal thing, and I like better the looks of the L300... but logically the L400 LWB would be a better option. More room and better rear suspension.

LWB ?
SWB ?

I know there are tons of places on the forum about how the fuel consumption goes, but that doesn't tell me anything. How many kilometers do you make with a full, on a normal day ?

Yaaaah thanks !

Yep, you got the LWB and SWB correct.

I get about 550 KM's per tank of Diesel, so that is around 60 Litres of Diesel or so. The tank holds 75 but I have not pushed it that low.

There are Gas and Diesel versions. I personally prefer Diesel as it costs less than gas and has more torque. My Royal Exceed gets better mileage on the highway than in the city. It is a fair difference in my opinion. Still, better on fuel than my 4Runner was.

As to the model names there are:

Exceed
Jasper
Super Exceed
Royal Exceed

Each of those is an L400 model. (I think there might be Exceeds in the L300 models...) This is the same way as a Tercel has:

Base Coupe
DX Coupe
DX Sedan
LE Sedan

Salut Kim!

You won't able to import a Delica in Quebec as you need to be owner of it before 2009. The only option is to gt one that was already in Quebec! I'm sorry for the bad news. I've been trying to find a solution to have it plate here but for now It's living in Ottawa that came go be the best solution so I can get a Ontario plate! Anyway if you do find a solution I'd like yo know!
