I used interstate before and they were good. Changing them is a little awkward as the red (hot) terminals are in the rear and there is a little margin for error when removing them, you have to watch you don't arc them on the crossmember above. I put a pair of rubber gloves over teh terminals to prevent that from happening. For the record, I'm a chicken when it come to anything electrical. I Had a bad accident years ago.brewskie wrote:What brands would folks here recommend. The shop that does my oil changes sell Interstate and they specialize in diesels. Anyone know which model would work well in my Deli. I live in Winnipeg so a high cca would be critical I would assume.
If not Interstate then what else?
Oh yah, can I replace them myself? Maybe save a few bucks on labour.
Cheers

Re: dual battery replacement
hi, robert, you cna chnage it but be careful as its very close to each other on positive & negative on super exceed like your,
you can buy any exide battery as long as its a flat top battery, pls dont buy the one that is not flat on the top. as it wont fit. now dont try to take out the middle handle that hold the 2 battery as this is the one who put this 2 together without hitting the ground terminal,
make sure you install it back the way before.to avoid problem on electrical system.
hope this help & enjoying your ride.
cheers;

Re: dual battery replacement
finally replaced my dual set-up with one Optima red top 900+ CCA's. Just in time the temp has dropped here in Ottawa and it starts nicely! should do well for Winterpeg as well

Re: dual battery replacement
Does anyone know if this is accurate?EricN wrote:Chances are it is only about 400 amps to start.
My delica wouldn't start today for the first time in 2+ years since I've owned it. I still have the "original" Japanese batteries in there (dual setup). One was swollen and frozen solid. It was trying to start, but you could tell it was low on juice.
Here's my situation...I only drive my Delica once, maybe twice a month. I plan on doing an AGM type battery with a Deep cycle for AUX, but I don't need that setup for a couple years. Would two cheap batteries from CT or the like be good enough for now? And what is the smallest CCA I should go with per battery (i'll still buy two)?
I've been reading about batteries all day, so any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: dual battery replacement
I tested the starting load with a inductive meter and measured it at 275 Amps.

Re: dual battery replacement
Would it require more amps in the (really) cold, Jay?
Your batteries are toast, Adam, as you've discovered in your other post. So the cold is demonstrating this and as you only run your engine twice a month they are not getting the charge they need and the cold is having them for breakfast.
That is my two bits.
Falco.

Re: dual battery replacement
Ditto. The original dual Japanese batteries on my 1992 L300 Chamonix that came over with my Deli (second Vancouver owner) in 2008 from Japan died from the cold on my Holiday road trip to Canmore where it was between -15 to -20 every night for a week in the Rockies.
You don't need to look any further than Polar Battery on ~1st and Burnaby in Vancouver/Burnaby for a cheap and quick replacement. I picked up two JCI Group 24 700 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) for $230 incl. GST/HST. $115 all-in per battery and I can swap it myself in about an hour.
Turns out the are the supplier for Lordco, Napa etc, so quicker and cheaper to go to the source. Thanks for the multiple Polar Battery reccomendations here!
A word of advice for Lower Mainland Deli Drivers: It is worth getting 5W-40 oil in the Winter even if you only foresee yourself doing a cold road trip once per winter. My 15W-40 that CVI somehow convinced me to put in even though I am a skier turned to Mollasses in the -20 weather and had to get my Van towed to underground parking lot to warm her up to re-liquidize my coolant and oil. Defer to 5W-40 in the winter even if you are only travelling between Vancouver and Whistler where it is rare to experience temps below -5!
