Just bought my first Delica

Post by new2delica »

We just finished buying a 94 Delica Exceed. 127K on it but well maintained. I left Richmond, BC on the 30th of September on her maiden voyage and was pleased at how it went over the rockies. I've read a number of posts and was surprised when at 110 kph my tack was still only at 2700 rpm.. but pleased I might add. Gas mileage was better than many posts I read. In the 1000 kms I just put on (taking the Coq to Kamloops and the Yellowhead over and past Edmonton to Camrose I averaged 25 miles per Canadian gallon or for you metrics about 11.32 litres / 100 km.

A benefit I noticed driving it for the first time at night was that being closer to the side of the road the oncoming traffic headlights weren't as hard on the eyes.. not to mention being higher than they were likely pointing helped... :-)

Very happy that I had the dealer put on highway tires... they made a big difference I am sure.

Climbing up the Coq. My speed fell to 90 km/hr at one point but I switched to power mode and back up the speed came. I did most of the trip .. except for that steep part travelling at 110 kph. Coming down this side of the mountains.. and hitting flat land my mileage for the last 400 k's since filling was 28.38 mpg.. in fact it improved with each fill starting at 23 over the Coq.

What a true pleasure to drive these rigs. Only difficulty I had was changing lanes to get around one rig... a dodge van had pulled up beside me so the driver could examine my vehicle and boxed me in... and the looks I have been getting her in Alberta... must be envy.

Hey Hugh!
Welcome to the club! Your experiences were the same as mine and I have to add that my 400 is my second Delica. The first was a 300 and the switch was, at the time, mostly for the reason of travelling to and from the coast. The 300 was very slow on a couple hills (45 kmh at times) on the Coquihalla and the 400 was the same as you... 90 kmh on the hill up from Hope and 120 easily - even as high as 130 at one point while passing... yes, PASSING!!! I too was VERY impressed. Wait till you get a chance to try it offroad... the 300's are awesome offroad but the 400's are ridiculous!

I hope you can make it down to one of our meets in Cowtown or we can try something interesting 1/2 way between to include as many as possible.

You gotta post a pic or two of your Deli - we wanna see! :-D
Cheers!
Ian

On the plus side, gas mileage for my L300 is between 9 and 11 L / 100km when I'm not driving like someone my age... 8-)
