fried my wires

Post by bradrutherford »

hello So i tryed to take care of my running lights this evening and it didn't go as planned.
i got some wire and i think i did it right (the black wire to the green one with a white stripe)on my passenger side then i went to see if it worked and it didnt. i noticed it smelled like burning so i shut er down. should i have done both sides before i tried it or is there something else wrong? thanks

sounds to me like you didn't connect it right... the black wire needs to be cut, and then you connect the wire from the front running light to the black wire connected to the light and most definitely NOT to the black wire connected to the vehicle.

well i connected a new wire to the black one that goes to my blinker and then i ran it to the green one with a white stripe. isn't it what this link tells me to do? viewtopic.php?f=10&t=339&p=2520&hilit=marker#p2520
So you dont think it is because i didn't hook up both sides before i tried it?
thanks brad

the 2 sides thing shouldn't make a difference, but I did both sides on the 2 vehicles I've done so far...

something's not right in your hook-up if it was smoking etc... I'm just not sure what from the description.

there are 2 plugs connecting to the corner light pod, you should be working with the upper connector (the one going to the amber light)
cut the black wire that is going to that light, and leave the wire that is coming out of the vehicle hanging (you won't be using that end of the black wire) connect the other end of your newly cut black wire (the end connected to the connector going to the light) to a length of spare wire.
run that spare wire through to the connector behind the front marker/signal light pod, strip back a section of the green wire with white stripe (NOT the green with yellow stripe) and splice your new wire in to that, you do not cut this wire, just strip it so that you can splice in to it.

once everything is spliced make sure to solder the wires in place and tape up any exposed wire so it can't short on anything.

I've done this mod on 2 Delicas so far, and other people have reported doing it successfully on their Delicas as well (and actually on several other JDM vehicles)... If you still can't get it to work, try taking some pictues of where you are splicing to what so that I can see if I can spot anything obvious...

ok thanks for the help. seems a bit confusing but i think i know what i did wrong. i didn't cut any wires i just spliced into the black one and the green one (with the wite stripe). and hooked it up. so i guess that was a bad idea. do you know how i can fix it? is it just the wire that i fried and thats all or could it be something else too. do you have any idea how hard it would be to replace the wire? is it verry long?

thanks again brad

if you didn't cut the wire, what you effectively did was ground the marker lights... it SHOULD have blown a fuse rather than burn out the wire, but it's hard for me to say without seeing anything...

Once you have the wiring sorted out, check the fuses, most likely one of them is burnt out and should be replaced, if the wire itself is burnt, then you'll have to find out the extent of the damage and replace it, not really sure where it all runs to, but I'm sure it runs up behind the dash somewhere.
