Insurance questions - arghh!

Post by mountainmack »

Hi Delica owners

We are currently shopping to buy a Delica and could pose MANY questions to you folks about Delicas but right now insurance is the thing that is frustrating us. I am basically ready to buy and plan to fly to Vancouver, buy a Deli and drive it home (to Yukon) all in 4 days! My problem is that when seeking an insurance quote, none of the companies can tell me how much it will be and they seem to be indicating that it will take a couple of days AFTER i find the one I want to actually insure it (since Delicas are not in the insurance company's system and they have to send out the specifics to an underwriter in order to get a quote).

Can you folks tell me how long this takes, what I can expect to pay and any other hidden frustrations that i can expect to encounter while insuring, registering, etc.. AS I understand things, my insurance scenario will be similar to the scene in Alberta (although you ICBcers can feel free to offer any insight that you have!)

Many thanks
Sean and Isa

I bought my Deli in New Westminster and went down the street to insure it right away.It cost the same as insuring any other vehicle although they did askif it was a right hand drive, although I was charged no extra for that. My Deli is a 1994 Chamonix.

When I picked up my Delica from Mardy I got it insured that same day, in fact, I got plates on it before I even drove it off of Mardy's lot!

Mind you, I got it insured in BC, and Mardy already had everything setup. However, I don't think it is any different from normal, but then again, there are a large number of Delica's in BC, so they are probably already in the ICBC system.

Thanks folks - what about collision and comprehensive? One company told me that they would only insure for liability. Does ICBC (not an option for me) insure for comprehensive or collision? What about other companies for those of us outside BC? I have heard that Meloche-Monnex is good?

Thanks again

We got insurance (Collision and Comprehension) on our Deli the same day we bought it (5 starr auto/ CC auto). Insurance broker came to the lot, we paid for the insurance, and off we went! :-)
I'm not sure if anyone else asked but the Deli's are insured the same as a passenger car. I thought forsure since they are 4 x 4's they'd be more expensive to insure like our 4by truck. It was a pleasant surprise!

Hey MountainMack!

Sounds similar to things here in Alberta. EASY to get basic coverage but more difficult to get collision. I just registered mine in Alberta after having insured it in BC for over 2 years.

In BC, like others say, it is no problem to get coverage through ICBC... BUT... because ICBC has spread inaccurate information regarding the safety of RHD vehicles, private insurers outside of BC are now more afraid of (or just plain refusing to) write comprehensive coverage. I use the same insurance as my house and my wife's car and get a discount on multiple vehicle insurance but need to get an appraisal before I can get the comprehensive coverage and needed an Out of Province Inspection (Alberta) done prior to getting basic insurance.

Will try to find out who is the underwriter for mine - the agency is Rogers Insurance here in Calgary. Great rates too... basic insurance using it for work as well is under $500 and fully covered estimated under $1000.

Hope that helps a bit.
Cheers!

We got insured by ICBC in a matter of minutes, full Roadstar discount. I think we're paying around 90/mth.

They said it didn't say RHD anywhere on the registration, and that it didn't matter. As it shouldn't.

Never have I heard of such a delay to plate or insure a vehicle. I don't know who told you that, but it sounds uninformed to me.

If its already landed and registered in BC, you should be able to go get insurance at any Autoplan office. Your dealer can help you with this.

I think he means getting insurance in the Yukon.
There was an importer called Outback Imports in the Yukon bringing in JDMs. Are they still there? Maybe you could ask them how or whom they point their customers to for insurance. :-)

I'm in Alberta, through a broker here. But the insurance company is Economical Mutual Insurance Company. I had no problems 2 1/2 years ago, but I did provide my broker with an appraisal, since I had one anyway. If you buy from one of the usual dealers around Vancouver, they should be able to arrange an appraisal.

Have your broker check with Economical, it shouldn't be an issue.

PM me if you need my broker contact info.
