Triple Tanking an L400

Post by Mr. Flibble »

After all the great posts on here, I have decided to go with a Dual-Tank Veggie oil system for My Deli when I get it, as this makes the most sense. However, I have also seen people post about using the LWB L400 to put in two Veggie Oil tanks - which makes even more sense as you could carry a massive amount of WVO under a LWB Deli.

How would one go about doing this however? How would you suggest linking the hot WVO tank to the "cold" WVO tank? I get the feeling that a constant cycling between the two tanks would be inefficient, and reduce the overall temperature in the tank that directly feeds the engine.

Has anyone installed multiple WVO tanks? If so, how did you do it?

My thoughts on this are: 1 "small" WVO heated tank (i.e. Hotfox) and 1 "large" WVO tank that can feed into the small tank with the flip of a switch to start the pump. I am however, very much open to better ideas!

Whats the reason for 2 wvo tanks, instead of one large wvo tank? Can add a lot of extra cost and complexity.

I can see why the 2 tanks as you can get way more fuel than you could with a large one, but not sure why you feel the need for a hotfox in Victoria?

Well, I don't absolutely require a Hotfox per say, obviously, I need to keep tank #1 heated, and given that I plan on going on long trips all over BC I have a concern about the WVO gelling when I am at higher altitudes and lower temps than when I am just trundling around Victoria.

Loki hit the nail on the head though. My reasoning for 2 tanks is that the LWB of the L400 can support 2 WVO tanks, in separate locations with a larger capacity than 1 single large tank. So, I am thinking of the 2 WVO tanks in order to carry a huge amount of WVO outside the Van without having to keep jerrycans of WVO along for the ride.

I don't think you will need to worry about the cold oil cooling down the hot oil as you, to the best of my knowledge, don't need to heat the whole tank even at really cold temps, just the oil near the up take. the hotfox does that, the rest of the take can get pretty cold with little issue. if you think that you will be in Extremely cold temps for long periods just make the lines, pump and fittings between the too tanks are over sized.

Ok, I get it. So how much WVO can you hold under there in 2 tanks?

I am not certain yet - but my guess would be at the very least 120 litres, and hopefully much more.

another thing to consider, I'm thinking I will do this at one point in the conversion of my LWB, is to mount a really small tank some where convenient and use that for your diesel, then you can add your stock tank to the list of tanks hold veg.
