I need a better than factory oil filter...

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

I need a better than factory oil filter...

Post by Drumster »

I need a better than factory oil filter which is locally available for my L400 and which won't require expensive/time consuming alterations to install. Something with substantially better filtration than stock.
Any recommendations?

How about a bypass oil filter: http://www.delica.ca/forum/bypass-oil-filters-4499.html
You won't need to change your regular oil filter that often anymore.

out of curiosity, why do you require better filtration?

Well, I guess my use of the word "need" is a bit of an overstatement. More accurately, I "want" better filtration.
I want to run synthetic (Pennzoil) and don't want to change it any more frequently than I have to. I had intended to use a CM filter from Canton Racing in the US but found out they don't make them in our thread size. (Evidently their filters work down to 8 microns at 12 Gal per minute and last for 10,000 miles.)
I'm no expert on these things but I just want my oil to stay clean longer and ultimately, my engine to last longer.
Cheers!

I plan on installing the Frantz Bypass Oil filter in my L400. The technology is quite sound, and many bypass oil filters use paper towels, even on stock Diesel engines. Since a paper towel filter is a bit of overkill in my opinion (generally used for larger engines from my research) the Frantz TP filter should more than fit the bill.

I also plan on putting a few Neodymium Magnets on the top of the Frantz to capture more ferrous particles.

Check "Delicat's new ride" post, at some point it shows the by-pass filter installed. It was pretty easy and apparently I won't have to change my oil and filters for a few years, time will tell... We just spoke with someone who hadn't changed their oil for 5 yrs without any problems (oil analysis done to confirm same).

Well worth the inital cost IMO.

Going to put one on the Delica as well when I get the chance. Not enough time to do anything ! :? :-D

There are a host of NTZ oil bypass filters on Ebay at the moment. Unfortunately the seller will not ship to Canada. These are the large paper towel versions. They are the older series "G" bypass filters. They look to be a screaming deal, they are only $20 each plus shipping. (They are the discontinued G series NTZ bypass filters).

I did some research, and the way the filter cartridge works is different from a normal paper towel roll (although you could modify a standard roll of paper towel, and reverse the hose fittings on the filter to make a normal roll work. I think NTZ did this so you are more likely to buy their filters otherwise).

However, if you bought a set of 10 filters and the casing, you would have enough to last for 10 years of bypass filtration until you needed to use a paper-towel modification.

You can see here the difference between the Radial Filtration (which NTZ uses) and Axial Filtration (used in the Frantz):

As I mentioned, it appears to be a gimmick to get you to purchase their specific filters, However, by shortening the paper towel, or modifying the filter housing you could turn one of these into a Frantz style filter with little effort.

When you capture enough ferous ,you can make a Bueller! :-D

I am going for the Frantz in a while, cleaning my oil with
poo-tickets is almost as cool as fueling on garbage (WVO).

Whatever the option it seems to be a good thing for sure,
some piece of mind for engine longevity.

Right ON! 8-)

This sounds like a good idea. Can you tell me what Amsoil part numbers, thread sizes etc. to ask for so I'll get the right set up? Also, I'll need to find a good location for the system. Can you recommend or do you have photos?
Cheers, T
