Guidlines for fitting a Locker or LSD

Post by strangerover »

Hi all..
I spent ages working this out in the UK.

Now you guys are getting the L400 hopefully some of this info will help..

Pre 1996 (series 1 models are what I have experience with)

Rear axle in SWB is generaly the small diff type
ALL LWB models (often Super and all Royals) are the big diff axle
Chamonix model is most likely to habe an LSD but its the small diff axle.

Front axle has a small diff... no aftermarket available...
Some V6 models may have the larger diff... allows a aftermarket locker to be fitted...

so to fit a ARB locker.....

1) Get yourself a Long Wheel Base axle, into this you can fit a ARB locker.

I did this... if I was to do it again I would go further..

2) Get yourself the LWB axle...
now go to a car breaker....
find a 4.9 axle ration MK2 pajero, take its rear diff hosuing and diff.
take its front diff after checking its the large diff type. The entire front axle and drive shafts swap into the Delica.
This gives you a 4.9 ratio diff front and rear... it also means you can now fit ARB lockers front and rear.
Doing this you need to shorten the front prop shaft by 10mm.
Also the 4.9 ratio will suit bigger tyres better and if your going this far you will have probaly fitted 265/75/16 tyres on L200 pickup rims.

there is another way....

Get the LWB axle again.
Now find your Pajero MK2 with either the Factory locker or LSD.
Now swap the entire hub and half shaft assembley and diff acrrier from the pajero into the LWB Delica axle.. it all bolts into the tube case...

Any questions .. please ask.. it took me nearly a year of research to work out the above.. in teh UK I know people who have
used the pajero axle bits on the delica axle...

here is a pic of a SWB diff and a LWB with ARB locker fitted

I did try to fit the fornt locker.. but gave up when i found I never seemed to need it after fitting the rear...

but at one time this is what i had lying about..

nice arb! I ran with one before and they work great!(not a delica) I don't plan on driving my van anywhere near that bad of terrain where I would need a selecable locker. Nice to see some of us do!
