3500 rpm at 90 km/h

Post by Sureshot »

I have just recently purchased a new to me 1991 Super Exceed. Just wondering if 3500 rpm at 90km/h on flat highway sections is normal or a little high. Also what is the best way to start the vehicle in the cold. It takes quit a few turnovers before it catches. Thanks for the help

Is it a 5sp manual?
For an auto that's high....I know manual's rev higher. I'm sure someone with a manual will chime in.

If it's an auto, probably worth counting the shifts... I had a north american vehicle which blew the solenoid for 4th gear in the slush box and would wind right out on the highway rather than shift up. If it only shifts twice, there's an issue... but I'm sure that someone else with more experience and these boxes can come up with a better offer of help :M

Your overdrive ain't working  Should be around 2400 RPM approx. Probably electrical as stated above.

for starting it in the cold, are you waiting for the Second Click to start it? I was just talking with someone who all summer and last winter had been starting it as soon as he put the key in the ignition and wasent sure why he would fog the entire block over in white smoke when he started his L300, we went out , started it cold, waited for the second click (first click is glow plug solinoid starting , second click is it finished its cycle..) and after that it started great and now his neighbors like him again.... not everyone knows the diesel ways to doing things. and yes 3500 cc is to high for your van doing 90km

I would check your wiring to the OD switch first, but that is just me I like to check the cheaper stuff first :)

When you press the overdrive switch on and off is the dash indicator going on and off? Also is the kick down cable correctly adjusted as that can cause no overdrive also. The overdrive solinoid is on the left side of the transmission just after the shifter cable connection about half way along the transmission pan and its held on with 2 bolt that point down.May be worth removeing and cleaning out but they have been known to fail. When removeing be carefull to clean off the area around so no dirts gets inside the transmission and also make sure the 2 o-rings go back on correctly!
Hope this helps

Could this also be a sign of head gasket failure? The kick down cable adjustment didn't make much of a difference. The OD light comes on but only changes the RPM's by about 200. Any other ideas?

Check the transmission fluid.

It should be red and not brown.

It should not smell burnt.

It should not be low (fluid level).

Take it to a transmission shop. They can test the switch.

No. Get the switch checked. Always start with the simplest most obvious answer and work up from there.
