I was in lovely Duncan BC for the last 3 weeks. So many Delicas on the island!!!!
Anyway after returning home to find that my loved one refuses to start.
The battery and connections are fine, the relays all click in and do their thing, as well as the other little box that sits to the far right of the starter relays. but there isnt even a fart from the starter. No turnover no nothing. What gives?
Fuses are ok, unless there are some hidden ones not on the fuse block.
THis is frustrating to say the least since my delica is quite badly parked...
help
deader than a doorknob

Have you checked that there is power at the starter? Can you jump power straight onto the starter to see if it will turn over?
I would look there first, we have had one that came in and the power lead to the starter had corroded and was giving us issues.

starters do burn out.. killed my alternator all ready. try taping your solonoid..( piggy backed on your starter) if you turn it over and it dos'nt even click, then thats what to check from my experience.
Heat can also kill solonoids so make sure your not overheating it.. you could build a heat shield if its a problem.
mines a 5 spd so i could push start it... is yours?

If I try to start the motor there is no sound at the starter or solenoid.
if i connect the small (control) wire (middle of 3 wires located on solenoid) to the right side wire on the starter the starter will crank and start the van.
If I connect the small (control) wire to the battery, the starter will crank.
THere was a relay behind the seat of the van that is connected in the system and this seems to be operating correctly. It clicks when the key is turned to start position. (I am not confusing this with the glo plug relays).
I also remembered that I did have issues with the automatic transmission safety interlock and that I sometimes had to jiggle the shifter to get the thing to start. Although I disconnected this and tried all manner of ways to bypass it.
Could this still be the problem or should I take off the starter and solenoid and run crying to the first garage?

that sounds like a dead solenoid to me.. even thought it's clicking it could be clicking in and out and not actually working...

blakc smoke in mexico..
Hey there lost 1, i know this is a bit off topic, but haven't heard from you in awhile on here, and i was wondering if that issue with the excessive black smoke that you had while in mexico ever got figured out.. did you finaly found out what the cause of this problem was? how did the van run on your way back? and on another note, what the hell are you doing in Matane! (i am familiar with matane as i have a few friends that used to live there..) anyways, good luck with the starter issues, let us know what you find out! Cheers tabarnac!

hey surferboy
I PMed you earlier, but for some reason it never went through. Anyway the problem of black smoke was high altitude (fuel pump not adjusted for this),and poor quality fuel. Thats it, thats all.
As for Matane, well it just seemed like a natural progression from Duncan BC. Actually its a really long story. You have friends from here, now that I find strange.

the fun never ends
Here is a new problem that may or may not be related.¸
All of a sudden I have no power at the glo plugs. I checked and there is no power at either of the glo plug relays. There is no fusible link that I can find.
I am getting desperate, as my other car is dead too.
If there is someone in Eastern Canada reading this, I may consider selling the Delica, as I just don`t have the time to mess around with these niggling problems that keep popping up...
