Not sure if this post should be here or in the L300/400 technical section, but here goes...
Counting down to a shiny new (to me) Delica from Mardy, and been reading up on posts here and on the UK site regarding the proliferation of IP-and-related-seal failures due to ultra-low-sulphur dino-diesel.
While I do not plan to run high levels of biosiedel for the time being, I have read a study where a 2% mix of bio-diesel (B2?)replaces a large amount of the lubricating properties of the sulphur, and is a Generally Good Thing To Do.
Fair enough, sez I. My plan was to go and buy some high grade bio from the Vancouver Co-op down on Industrial Ave. and add a litre or so when I fill up.
But I got to thinking - if I'm going to that length, why not go further and add in some extra ingredients (some thyme, basil, a little oregano...) and make up a broader-spectrum pre-mix cocktail to add to each tank.
Has anybody had experience with mixing biodiesel with other compounds and having unfavourable (or really good) results? My current thoughts on the mix are:
- primarily biodiesel, plus,
- engine seal lubricant/treatment for extra-happy seals, plus
- diesel fuel stabilizer/water treatment to stop the fuel from gelling
Hoping to save me some grief in the long run by keeping the internals happy, or is such a mix just overkill?
Tony.

Re: Bio diesel engine-treatment cocktail?
I've mixed your said additives with zero bad effects.
It's all good what you dump in there if they have good lubrication properties.
I've run ATF, used 10w30 filtered oil, costco canola oil, filtered and unfiltered veg oil, straight diesel, b20, b40, b80, b100 to power my Delica and he loved it.
It's all good my brother from another mother.

Re: Bio diesel engine-treatment cocktail?
Hooray for rugged old diesels! Although considering the colour of the used oil coming out of my Toyota at changes, I'm not sure I'd want to dump all that residue through the injectors. Just 'cuz one can, not sure if one should
I was wondering about the combinations of chemical wizardry, and if anyone had found curious results from mixing and then storing bio with these other additives - having them gradually evolve into butterscotch pudding at the bottom of the tank after a while.
I only fill up about 3 times a month, so I'm thinking if I pre-mix 30L or so of cocktail, it'll last me for 6 months. I understand most dino-based chemicals are actually good thinners for biodiesel, but was wondering about the other stuff.
The more I think about it, maybe storing bio for such a long time isn't such a good idea. Maybe just give 'er a good heavy dose of lube in the tank once in a while.

Re: Bio diesel engine-treatment cocktail?
You know, I'd just keep it simple. Have some bio or some filtered canola oil on hand and add some at each fill up. More in the summer (20%), less in the winter (max 5-10%). No need to add other extras to form a cocktail. It's all she really needs to keep her happy.
Good luck!
