Crazy question, I know, but has anyone here been so hardcore enough to actually jump on a plane, attend an auction in japan, and purchase a deli?
Cause plane tix are insanely below market value these days, I saw yvr return Osaka on air Canada for 650$ cdn tax etc. Incl.
That can't possibly be any worse off than someone from Toronto flying to Vancouver to purchase a delica, plus, there's probably way more to choose from at the auction than in all of Vancouver...
Just wondering....

Re: Auction in japan?
I had looked into it a little, when tickets were about $2000.00 return from Winnipeg, but at that time, and things may have changed since then, but there were not alot of auctions open to the public, and if you don't speak japanese, or have some one to take you around and translate for you, it could end up being rather expensive, but I think it would be quite an adventure. I was seriously considering it when prices were higher, if prices have come down that much, an adventure may be in order. However, I think I would try finding a private deal there, I think you might be able to find better ones that way.

Re: Auction in japan?
Auction prices have tripled!!!gulp. Does that mean the value of my deli has tripled? Or does that mean importers are making less?? Cause last time I checked, the price of a delica in Vancouver (for the most part) has gone down...

Re: Auction in japan?
I think you can't attend an auction in japan unless you are Japanese government licensed dealer.......I think i remember reading that on some Japanese auction sites that only certain companies can attend and bid...
could be wrong.....maybe you have connections..
let us know. i need a nissan safari

Re: Auction in japan?
t's a huge process to go to an auction in Japan. If you think your going to fly there, pick your van in auction, etc, your sadly mistaken.... Might as well pay an importer ( not a dealer ) to do it for you....

Re: Auction in japan?
Buy one already landed here.
Canadian dollar - Japanese Yen is horrible this year.
Average auction prices of L300 Delica's have more than doubled since last fall.
You can arrange for an exporter to show you how the auction houses work and if you're lucky, you may get to see one as a visitor. Aside from that, flying there for a few days or a week, you may just show up when there are junk Delica's on auction. The day you fly back, good one's may pop up.
It's a gamble.
That word is pretty specific. Buying from an auction is a gamble. You 'may' save some cash, but in the long run, unless you have luck running in your veins, you'll pay for it someway or another usually in mechanic repairs.
My advice after importing, helping others import, buying here, buying from a dealer there, buying from auction there, shipping hassles, etc...
Buy one locally that you can see, smell, drive and get a feeling for.
There are so many L300's in Canada already that it just does not make any sense to import one yourself unless you want that 'experience'.
You used to be able to import one for under $4,000 all in at your door ready to insure after you tossed on some new tires, brakes, etc... Those days are long gone.
Shipping + port fees + taxes + duties + oop requirement/parts + oop inspection + registration taxes + misc 'hidden' costs alone will average around $2,500-3,500 alone.
Then add the Delica cost. Average 2,500.
That's 6,000 so far.
Put on new tires, mechanical work and you'll get close to 8-9k.
For that, you can already buy one here with all the work done to it close to that.
You 'may' save 1-2k if you import it or you may loose 1-2k in surprises.
These days, it's just not worth the hassle and wait for L300's.

Re: Auction in japan?
hi, as jessie say its right.
for a quick note this year did went to japan for business trip to my partner in japan & went to the auction. i notice i can see all types of car but fewer delica now, then compare ot the price of delica here, compute it together, your time ,airplane, food, hotel & other. thing you have to spend there cost you more money than buying here. if you are just buying 1 car forget it.
its not easy to do go to auction & buy one. thats not the way.
as importer car dealer as you know we sometime loose haft of the business deal with delica some time as we have to do work & comply to this vehicle to make it road safety. we are not like in the phils or other asian country i guess ,we dont change tire headlight , daytime running, inspection & other thing.
just buy it from japan & insure it. the process is easy. but here in canada as a dealer lots & tons of thing to do to put this delica in the road safely.
so pls think it over before you do purchase this delica in japan. not easy:
this is just my ipinion;
Cheers;

Re: Auction in japan?
Im prolly going to Japan in the spring.. if i can get a round trip for under $1000 i will be happy..
I know enough exporters i will be tagging along to some auctions for sure..
If its a one time guy then going to japan isnt worth it.. but if you buy a lot of cars then it can pay for itself..
for me personally i love traveling.. and love buying cars.. so its a win win..
