propane injection
Hi, I thought of posting this in tech,,but really its a question about it all
Has anyone actually put propane injection on their rides? I was considering this, but my worry is the head, will it take the extra pressure and heat? I would hate to add it with the cost and then have my head blown (no jokes please) maybe a mechanic could speak to this as I have the money to put on a propane kit and other mods but am not wanting to damage my engine. who can tell me the facts and what the chances of actual damage are
thanks
Noel

I know the gas sits in the tank as a liquid but is atomised with a jet going into the air , but I wonder about the added combustion, as it has a lower combustion rate than diesel, Im sure the big trucks kits like for our dodge have it figured out, but I want to know about our much smaller parts. will the added combustion of the propaine with the diesel increase the temp? Im putting in the intercooler from our old 760 Volvo, who wants to feed a gas engine any more right lol........ so the intake air will be more dense with the cooler air, so more power with more air........such a tough decesion with something I really like. and I dont want to damage my engine, and another question regarding it, if I increase the horse power with propane injection and the intercooler, how much of a change can my torque converter take , hmmmm will I need to upgrade that also so i dont kill my trans. thank god wvo is free I know with my lift and mods I will be using more fuel... ahhhhhhhh the never ending cycle, but it keeps me out of trouble

WCNewbie, do truckers run propane of those big engine's, for want of more power? A few installers, quoting from $1600 to $2000 including a tank, suggested that propane would lower exhaust gases and increase HP by 10 to 20hp with a engine of that size. More if a bigger exhaust (on my list), turbo boosted, and the possibility of a intercooler installed. Now where to install one in a rig that already runs, what 5 radiators, WVO and propane?? Only room I have left if under the front skid plate, already using the spare tire space and the space underneath the diesel filler. Research on the web seems to generally point to a cooler and cleaner running import diesels, any not to be stuck in the slow lane on the mountain highways. There's has been some good reports of this fellow in Surrey - http://www.propaneguy.com/ . You can build your own two, but safety would be important, like using a tank as almost a front bumper doesn't seem too smart (yet you do see propane tanks sitting right at the rear of many PU's). http://www.mrsharkey.com/lpg.htm has a good idea, but a hose just running into the intake, come on; wouldn't it be easy to tap in a nozzle (barbeque nozzles have to used) or put in a sparge tube, a negative pressure regulator (do you need a vaporizer?), and a 12v gas/elec solenoid. Can you tell I'd like to run propane?
Good to here your interested in WVO, trucker buddy's in town have been very curious of my WVO endeavors. That's how I got my tidy tank pump, was asking about one in the nearby parts store and fellow, with his own trucking company, offered me one for $50. Turns out is was still new in the box, just that it was a 3/4" when they only use 1'.
But spending the money of a lift is a better idea, and guess there's no facts here. Just some planning/wishfull thinking!

Oh im all excited, Da wife is jealous lol, some one to talk diesel with hahaha, no I have never seen a highway or off road truck running propaine, but I have seen them running wvo, and that excites me, a friend in Canmore does the conversions( done a highway tractor now), runs it on his landcruiser all winter with no problems. Im considering putting some loovers in my front end to direct the air to my intercooler, or a type of low snorkel type air intake that would be on the bull bars, I my self am having a custom front bumper made for my delica that will hold a winch, lights, tow eyes, so we have been using auto cad to come up with some designs for everything including a air deflector for trans cooler& intercooler, will be a different look than anyone else has,
I used to import unimog axels with a friend and convert them for compition off road cage buggies. and am looking at putting some mog 404 axels on, they have 6" of lift built in as they are portal axels and have cable lockers allready built in,
when we did this in the blazer we ran a reverse transfer case in it to get back the highway gears,, ya ya ya, everyone said the 203 trans case would not take the shear force on the back side of the gears, but that set up is Currently running over 500hp and has Never given up a cog, pretty sweet set up actually, alot of R&D went into it, even got on a 4x4 vid, bc4x4.com guys will know it as the hulk. my buddie kenny now owns it. but thats getting off track lol
I am going to be running my stock fuel tank for wvo and a small one for pump fuel, so I am thinking that the hole from the spare tire will have a split tank, or two tanks cuddled up next to each other, one for pump fuel and the other would be a propaine tank like that off a westfalia, as I dont need much propane and those tanks hold a surprising amount, of course this will all have a nice little crash cage on it, oh ya the spare will go on the roof rack or a swing out tire carrier that will cary a jack, and locked amo box for emergency tools, I ran that set up on my diesel blazer , had on board air with a air tank off a pup, could run full air tools on the trail, handy when you blow a bogger of the bead, nothin like some either, lighter, and air, POOF, lets go hahahah
ttyl keep me informed if you come up with a viable propane set up, im still looking into it,
ttyl

We want pictures of your mods as it happens! Goes with out saying.
Unimog axles under a Deli'; don't tease, that be the ultimate - even the mystery machine would be jealous! And who cares about highway gearing anyways, Delica's ain't great for that anyways. Mog axles weigh a ton too. I would harbour a guess that the cost of the unimog axles and the fabricating costs would come in lower then the cost of ARB airlockers 'installed' in both ends. Is that 203tc a gear unit, not a chain drive like the tc in the Deli? Is this the beast your talking about - http://www.bc4x4.com/fv/2002/hulk/ . WOW, 7'9' tall with a 3 and half foot step up - love the shot of it cruising over cement barriers!
Good idea about the westie tank, guy could pick one up at the wreckers and if it ain't too rusty, redo the top and paint. Then you have to have it inpescted I think, so they'll fill it for you.
Cheers,
Kev

Ya, thats Rob in the drivers seat, he was the owner of it at the time and the axel company, now its my other buddies truck, rob kept the propane caddy engine and we put in kennys stock car engine, so far he has broken 2 axel shafts , but he really likes to side step the clutch, amazing stuff now for the mog axels, we had some new types of shafts made and u-joints made from a type of steel that work hardens, and so far have never been broken, also f-350 disk brakes moded on to them, fun to have. but a hungry bugger that truck is, Delicas may not be fast, but when you have two gears at each hub that bring down the ratio to a fast crawl speed , sometype of overdrive is needed and the 203 was the best choice as it was on hand and stupid strong. but thats all years ago now, but for sure I will post as I mod, I dont have all the money i did back then, but am also not unable to mod, just cant do it all in a few weeks time any more hahahah.
I can tell I havent been working on vehicles much, I have all the skin on my knuckes . time to get back to it. im sure those caluses will all come back lol
