power blind repair

Post by Artacoma »

What not to do on a long weekend.

It looked like I just needed to fix the little plastic clips that hold the blinds in the tracks. 6 hrs and mucho cursin later I learned my lesson. As the photos show my crystal light roof had internal complictions leading to much hemmoraging. I was able to staunch the flow of flying screws shattering plastic to rebuild what should have been left alone.
I still have one perfectly operating power blind for showing off and the others have been satisfactorly rebuilt with metal tabs that are riveted to the blinds that hold closed with rare earth magnets and hold open with the built in springy things.I'm happy with that ,it works smoothly and easy.
If you have been repeatedly trying your blinds with one side not in the clips the internal cable is likely toast because it needs to be kept under tension to coil properly on the motorized spool. It's not user friendly. The cable is similar to a bike cable except that it has knobs bonded to both ends so it is not repairable without a new cable.
Was showing my van to a pilot friend and he said the ceiling light panel is the same as they use in Mitsubishi aircraft, neato!!
thats all

interesting... on mine I found that the cables worked perfectly, but that the blinds were no longer attached to them... despite the lack of tension that you imply as being necessary they didn't seem to have any problem operating like this... it ended up being a fairly simple fix, I reattached the blinds to the cables by wrapping a length of wire around the cable and then around the tab on the blind, now I have 4 blinds that all work properly... didn't require nearly as much disassembly as you needed there and I fixed 2 blinds (4 broken plastic clips) in about an hour (maybe 2...)

sorry to hear that it wasn't quite so easy in your case.... :(

Good job both of you for attempting this fix! We have only one that works and the other three close if you pull them closed, well closing the respective button. They hold closed if the roads are not too rough. Guess I'm worried about breaking interior bits off when attempting this fix. Time that could be better spent; fabricating new skid plates, changing timing belts, painting nudge bars, heck maybe installing lockers (that's be sweet). 8)

Sure like your bed/storage unit in your Deli.
